Z3 in for MOT today, bloody failed on windscreen washer provided insufficient washer liquid. I checked when I took it off SORN, but not this morning aaarrgghhh. Anyway I checked and yep no water, just a dribble. Drove home, took off reservoir which was full so cleaned it out, then tested and all fine, put it all back. 10 min job. I should have done it in garage carpark! Booked in for retest 8am tomorrow.

Since you have posted this thread thought i would add some additional information related to your failure.
Drivers can be issued with 3 points and a 100 quid fine if caught on a public road at anytime with washers empty or not working.
And if involved in an accident if insurance can prove washers were inoperable or empty then they can invalidate your claim.

Stephen.

Good to know, I have driven my delay with no water in the reservoir on many an occasion. 'I will fill it up when I get home' sort of thing-wont now. The Z3 did have water in but was clogged up with algae as last time I cleaned the tank out was when I first got her.

And I will bet a pound they would do this if the accident happened on a sunny day in the middle of summer, with a clean windscreen.

Schoolboy error. Easily done.
I always check the 'basic' things just before I take any car for an MOT. I would hate a failure, or even advisories, on things that are easy to sort at home.

Insurance companies especially are always looking for loopholes to get out of stuff like things that aren't legal to those improvements you've made like the induction kit or stainless exhaust and not told them about things they would deem a performance upgrade 🤔

Yep, they are in total control. You have a contract with your insurance provider. The contract is only valid as long as you, the insured, provide every piece of information they require. The onus is on the insured to be 100% accurate. The insurer never checks that information unless there is a claim lodged. Good business model (for them).

Another one of those business relationships where the customer is always wrong.

O no that’s pants ,😡
Very unfair😔
Why didn’t the person who was doing the mot just tell you 🙁

My mot was on Tuesday 🌞
And Snow White “ passed “🥰

To be fair, they were not working. I only use it in the dry and although I checked levels etc last month when off SORN I hadn't checked on day of MOT and it got gunked with algae on test day. As @Pond said ..schoolboy error. Which it was, other testers might sort it first, but it was fair dinkum

If my mot tester finds something small that is a quick fix he'll fail the car so the fail goes in the record then he'll fix it and do an immediate retest and pass.

Same with car warranties. You could have a failed touchscreen and they'll deny the claim because you were a day late or a few miles late on an oil change.

This is called the PRS
Pass Rectification Scheme
Like you say this allows testers to fix minor failures like empty screenwash , wipers , bulbs and the likes and if the tester hits prs on an item like you say it generates the fail to record i and generates the pass at the same time as the item is repaired.

Stephen.

Mine was more complexand although it was a simple fix it wasn't like just topping up the screen wash. It was resovoir out, emptied, cleaned and put back. I would not expect this to be part of PRS?

I had a tester do that, but he just told me to sort the sidelight bulb when I got home. I went back twenty minutes later to show him I'd done it, and he was confused as he'd already passed me. =))

Does anyone read all the pages in their insurance documents?

The policy I took out for my new car ran to 97 pages 👀
