Hey there everyone, have enjoyed reading all your posts the last week, hoping y'all can help me get this z3 running, sorry if this post gets long, but it been a saga.

Backstory: 1999 Z3, 50k Miles, built in late 1998. Was originally a 2.5l (manual), after a blown motor(even longer story) a local z3 mechanic swapped in a 3L out of a 2001 Z3. He could only get it. to crank not start, so i brought it gome to see if i can get it to run and then return to him to finish it up.

His code scanner originally showed an ews error so he just swapped in another ews, but then it wouldnt crank. We put the original EWS back in. I bought the Cable and installed inpa and got connected to the computer. There was 2 error codes in the the dme; 209 Manipulation Protection EWS and the rolling code sync issue. I cleared both errors and resynced the rolling code. Car still Cranks/no start. The rolling code error is gone, but error code 209 comes back every time i clear it.

I checked the ews module status in inpa and there are a couple values that bug me. "BC" always shows 'no' best I can tell from reading the forums this should be yes but unsure what BC is and how to fix it. The clutch switch show 'yes' when unpressed and 'no' when depressed. Which seems backward. But it will only crank when depressed, guessing just goofy wording?

I have checked both the dme and fuel pump relay and they are not getting grounded in the on position. So appears EWS is still not giving the okay.

Curious if anyone has thoughts/ideas. My current thought is to get an 3L DME with ews delete(Will they have to program the vin to match the car?) And if I do that will i need to b pass the ews module as well so it will still crank? The ignition barrel is really notchy, pondering replacing it while everything is apart. I would still like to get it running even with the 2.5L dme just to confirm it WILL run.

Thanks for reading - Jeff

If the original engine was a M54 with MS 43 DME, getting a 3.0L MS43 DME with EWS delete is the easy way of fixing this.

If the original engine was a M52TU with MS42 DME, then trying to fit a MS43 3.0L DME would be difficult.

You most likely have the M52TU engine with MS42 DME. Sending the MS42 DME away for an EWS delete and tune to 3.0L mapping would be the easy way to fit it.

3.0L Mapping.
You have to know what parts are 2.5L and what parts are 3.0L and tell the mapper. Failure to get this sorted will result in engine running problems
- Injectors? Most likely 3.0L
- MAF? Most likely 2.5L

Attached is a EWS.PDF to help you if you want to keep playing with the EWS.
