differential bush

I suspect that it must be two part bush and steel insert mate.

Tony.

yeah would have thought so too.... i email them to find out but curious to see if anyone else has fitted these bushes... ?

Just one maybe silly question but are the diff casings all the same on the Z3 range.

i dont think they are all the same i believe the M has a vented diff cover, but maybe all the diff bushes are the same, i sure someone else will correct me if i am wrong and some of the diffs are LSD / torsion...

off the top of my head i think theres 3 types. M case and with medium and small. Diff bushe is the same location on all.

quick pic of diff bush.... cant tell a lot from this....

and pic of my diff, the black is where its been sprayed with gt85 ....

looks like its the earlier 6 bolt diff cover plate... cleaned and sprayed the drain plugs, and the bolts will all be treated to some paint too, as will the diff cover, and anything that needs painting . tidying up

You can see from the first pic that the rubber is starting to delaminate from the metal ring it is bonded to. I'd say it's on it's way out from the ones I've experienced in similar condition.

ohhh yeah i didnt notice that i thought that was the indents in the bush to orientate it in the cover.... it definitely needs to come out then. hopefully i get a bit more done later....

whats anyones opinion of this bush it looks good to me....

You can see the two splits in the rubber where its started to give
The torque on it from the diff in drive is likely to make something sagging at idle kick quite abit.
My theory on this is the movement of the diff on the bush is equally not good to the mount, i replaced mine and the drive train clunk i did have has gone as said you really need to ragg it senseless to cause the diff mount damage.
For the cost i personally think its worth doing..
Does the diff look held central in the mount when its on the ground ? Mine sagged but to the eye looked like yours.

Daylight showing through the splits, one would assume you shouldn't have that, also the two delamination points on the outer edge look suspect. I would change it for either oem rubber or poly, me thinks the poly would be easier to fit.
State of it looks more age related than worked to death.

The bits where you can see light are merely a thin "membrane" of rubber from the injection/moulding process and don't have any function. I would say that that bush is still well serviceable to be honest. But now it's off a new Poly bush would be my choice,

Tony.

I wondered if the light showing was just a membrane, now I know. Seems a shame not to replace it as you have got it off, at least you will know it's been done.

I messaged strongflex today and their bush won't be here until Saturday.. I got a new diff cover gasket tomorrow I think I put it all back together.tomorrow, I can see how easy it comes apart now and its all clean and easy to take apart I need the car Thursday the bmw independant i going to get the gasket tomorrow will advise me if it needs changing

I may even ask my BMW specialist what they charge to supply genuine bush and fit it when I go show them the diff cover tomorow

A good idea if you want to keep it stock.:)

Tony.

I agree with Tony, it all depends on your vision of where you want your car to be. Shouldn't cost much to have the shop press the bushing into place while it's there. I'm definetly not a purist but there are those that are! JIM

thanks all i keep you posted on what Summerhayes says tomorrow be interesting to see their view on poly and original.... i have a go myself at getting the old out, put dont really want to get hammering that diff cover for fear of breaking that cover.....
