I have a small area of rust on top edge of passenger door that needs painting (after prep) What is the best spray paints to use and where to buy (Halfords etc?) The colour is Hell Red. I assume it would be primer, base coat and then lacquer. Any advice would be appreciated.
 
Just remember there are two Hell Reds/Hellrots:

Hellrot I (314) and Hellrot II (415)
 
There are different colour codes for most paints. You need the full code. I use Halfords, good product with excellent colour match every time I've used it.

Glad I asked, as I thought there would be just one Hellrot. Went to Halfords the other day and they did a stock Red which covers different BMW models but knew that wouldn't be right, they also mix the paint to the code so will go back. Am I right in thinking it also needs a lacquer/clear coat?
 
I would say so. You will need some 1200 grit wet and dry paper to flat the colour before applying the laqueur and before the last coat of laqueur.

Thats perfect timing for the spray application method thanks, I am about to paint my bumper, Topaz Blue, my first venture into bodywork repairs.
 
And everything was going so well. I had filled and sanded the rust area and applied the primer, on removing the masking tape and paper to stop the overspray, the tape pulled the lacquer coat off so the area just got bigger. Not sure what to do to stop it happening again. Other than bite the bullitt and have a complete respray.
 
Might be a bit late but your colour code should be on the suspension turret under the bonnet. Mine is Hellrot 314/3 and Halfords BMW Bright Red is a good match for this. There are a number of Autopaint companies who mix aerosol sprays. @TaffZee did a good write-up in his thread `Winter has taken its' toll'
