I know this has been covered before but the threads are all quite old.

I need INPA and a cable for the early OBD1 Z3.

Although my M52B28 single Vanos version was built in May '98, it seems to be an earlier/mixed build specification

No 16 pin OBDII socket under dash
Siemens MS41.0 DME

So I'm going to need the earlier serial port version cable, unless anyone knows whether there now is a USB one that works, all the old threads/info across the internet seem to suggest serial port are the only ones that work.

I just can't seem to find a source for the cable. Does anyone know where I can get one, it's getting urgent!

Or, if anyone has moved on from the older Z3's and want to flog/lend me their cable! Please!

If you’re looking to diagnose powertrain related issues, your engine controller is OBDII compliant. Any generic OBDII reader will work along with the adapter for the under hood OBD socket. Should be readily available:

Already got the adaptor cable as currently using a chinese Delphi system. That covers both MS41.0 (1997) and MS42 (later 1998 onwards) DME's but sadly, I've got an issue that is deeper than just clearing codes.

I believe the earlier MS41.0 needs the earlier cable to get INPA working correctly.

I have this cable kit book marked for connecting to a serial ported laptop https://buy2fix.co.uk/products/for-bmw-compatible-interface-v6-5-diagnostic-kitblack but don’t have link for the software yet.
I re-read the bimmerforums thread posted by NZ00Z3 and the links on the first page actually include INPA V5 (2016). It also seems the later versions and newer USB INPA cables seem to have resolved the issues previously needing direct RS232.

I've got a switchable USB cable on order, I'll let you know how I get on.
