Sometimes it is good to know how challenging a repair is going to be before you attempt it yourself, especially if you are a noob like me. So, I was wondering if we could rate some DIY repairs.

Base the difficulty from 1-10 [one being easy to ten being almost professional/ experience required]. Take into consideration time, special tools needed, access to the parts etc. I will start. Disagree if you want! :)

Level 4. Pull the dash out. this involved centre console removal, do research first, lots of work but not hard.

Level 4. Replace the oil filter housing gasket. Fan removal can be challenging and needs special tools, hard on the back and shoulders, easy to put back together once you have taken it apart. Many parts to be removed.

Level 1. Replace grommet for the radio whip antennae.

Level 2. Replace fan belt. Have to remove fan and shroud first.

Level 2. Install under footwell lighting. Tracking wires to centre light near mirror and soldering in is fiddly.

So, what about front shocks, rear shocks, Vanos repairs, engine rebuild, rocker cover gasket replacement, etc, this is just to get some opinions!

If your got the right tools ........... :p
And you set your mind too it and have access to the Internet and read up about it first you can achieve almost any task ;)

Update: Let's start with really basic description like my sample above ok? Detailed articles can be found throughout the site and other forums and if I do the work myself I will create an article. Anyway, just a really simple thing to start off with would be good - if anyone with a lot of experience can give some ratings it would be nice :) Cheers.

@Cooper In principle this is a great idea, is the scale 1 - 10 or 1 - 5? I would suggest the later, too much choice with 1 - 10 IMO.

Also a great idea, by just looking at the list of tools this could give you an idea of the complexity of the job.

@GazHyde is it possible (I know your list is long) to have a template set up if a job is being written up? like the link to the info in Rich's showcase?

Ooooh, soo many options to be honest!

Theoretically that's what the Article system is for, and I could look at adding some custom information fields to cover what certain things. However I'm waiting for a new article system to be released at the moment to replace the existing one which isn't being developed anymore. The new one is way better and it's currently in Beta testing, so probably a few months away from migrating over.

Problem with templates in general is defining a template which covers everything required, without being too long. There is an addon which allows me to force a set of questions as a thread is created. I think it's flexible enough to only ask those questions in specific forums, so that might be another way to do it.

I'll have a browse today at what I can provide, and come back with some options at some stage :)
 
Does anyone feel the need for me to do a detailed article on how to replace the oil filter housing gasket on a 6 cyl? I can if the information is scarce. Mind you if I can do it anyone can.
 
If you have the time to be able to write up what you have, and have useful pictures then yes we love people submitting articles!

I know the article system is heavily browsed, not just by members but also casual passers by. Most of the pages with the most views on them are in the article system.

Personaly i think it's worth posting info on what may seem a ''simple'' task,as if you have not done what ever simple job before your self it doesn't always seem that easy until you gain confidence and experience. So it should all be wellcomed imo. :).
 
And I WILL get around to post how to remove the instruments.

Ok. Here is a copy of the Article on how to replace the oil filter housing gasket on a 6 cylinder. I have submitted it for an Article with @GazHyde but would appreciate some constructive criticism from others that have done this procedure [accuracy] and from Noobs [does it give you the confidence to try]?

I have written it to an audience that has little experience with this type of work [like me!]. :)

Well written @Cooper I'd feel confident using these instructions to tackle such a job even if I were unfamiliar with DIY. Hopefully this will inspire someone to give it a shot and save some $$. Thanks, JIM
