Hello!

I recently purchased a 2000 2.3 Z3 with a dinan stage 2 tune unbeknownst to me. My intent was to install a stock intake to replace the CAI that is currently on the car. I understand that the tune was designed for a CAI but my expectation is that the ECU would be able to adjust the AFR with or without. Does anyone know if that is the case? If the car will not be able to adjust and run properly without a CAI then is it an easy process to revert the tune to either a stage 1 or stock?

Thanks!

I doubt if anone in the UK knows what a Dinan stage 1 or 2 means, unless you provide some information and a photo of your CAI. Most CAIs are actuallly warm air intakes, but look pretty . . . Has the engine been remapped? Has it been on an accurate rolling road? Give us some information.

Can't speak for yhe OP but Dinan are very tight with BMW in the U.S or at least used to be. Steve Dinan started the company and a bunch of their products could be installed without voiding warranty. In the z3 world they did a decent job (by all accounts) of bridging the power gap in the U.S spec z3m with the s52 by supercharging.

Dinan Stage 1 for our cars is an off the shelf flash that alters fueling and timimg so yes a remap. Stage 2 makes some minor changes. The dinan cai that was part of it is a true long cai that drew air from low down in the front of the car.

@zelejel if the car runs fine you can probably just leave it alone. Off the shelf maps are typically very conservative and fatten up the WOT fueling while adding a little advance.

It will adjust. Dinan uses the stock ecu and stage 2 is not an Alpha N tune.
You have a very well thought out programm don’t ruin it.
a free flow filter WOULD help to keep some of the hp (you will lose some) but it’s up to you.

Fyi the intake and filter frame are a cross reference to any 6 cylinder bmw of that era, so you can mix and match second hand parts for this.

Cheers all for the replies. My initial thought with the car was to revert it back to stock as that is generally my preference with any cars. The Dinan CAI I have is not aluminum but a carbon fiber wrapped plastic that has started to peel. Beyond the cosmetic issues, having to loosen the headlamp to service the filter was a big driver for me to return to the stock configuration.

However, after more consideration, I decided I'd leave the CAI as the car does drive and sound great with it and the complementary Dinan exhaust.

Thanks!
