Hi All,
Last weekend I have worked on rusty bits on my Z3. I have removed the sills, cleaned them of any rust and repainted. It's not an easy task when you work in your friends garage limited to only 1 weekend. As I was working on this it struck me and I have asked myself a question why aren't the outer panels made out of plastic? Obviously BMW may have calculated that the lifespan of car covered with panels that don't rust could be too long.
At the point where we are now, where our cars are over 20 years old anyway I don't think that calculation matters anymore. We are some crazy folks who just want to drive these cars and keep them in the best nick possible, right?
I am wondering if anyone of you have come across new plastic outer body panels? I know it may be just my dream but If I was ever to replace them I'd rather change them for plastic. Many other cars have plastic sills. Our Z3's have both bumpers made of plastic. Why not the rest? (maybe apart from the door and boot lid )
