I've just bought a 1.9 Z3 which I believe has the 1895cc engine, but I've noticed there are several versions with different BHP figures. Is there a way I can check from the VIN number which variant I have in my car?

What year is your Zed...
The earlier ones have the more powerful M44 unit which is 140 bhp and an easy way way to tell is that it will have a twin cam head with the plugs and plug leads in the centre of the valve cover under a black plastic cover like this.

And the less powerful version will have a valve cover that looks something like this.

I think the less powerful engine is called the M43 on these engines it's always a good idea to change the coolant every couple of years as these are prone to head gasket failure if the coolant system is neglected

You can get a free bmw vin checker off the net and once you type in your details you should get an in depth description of the car and it look something like this and it should tell you the engine type

1999. Seems I have the less-powerful version.

Many thanks, Vince.

nice little turbo and 8-10 psi will fix your problems!

you can squeeze more bhp from the m43 than you can from the m44, metric mechanic managed to get more that 210bhp with an n/a m43

Metric Mechanic don't do a M43 conversion or upgrade, they only do the 16v engines which are the M42 from the E30 and the M44 from the E36 & Z3.

The M43 was produced from early 95 to 97 in the Z3 and the M44 from 96 to 99 in the Z3, the M43TU was used from 99 onwards. It was these early M43 that journalists said theZ3 was underpowered, BMW responded with the M44, and IMHO the best engine in the Zseries, especially when slightly pimped ;)

But which ever version you have, they are all nice cars, and when the sun is out and the top is down who cares which engine you have...

Wow! That's quite an increase, but I suspect at a high cost. I'd ike a few more bhp without spending too much.
Thanks.

Our very first Z3 was a year 2000 1.8i, a 1997cc single camshaft engine. The car took us every where, including a holiday in France. Unfortunately it was the heat that finally did for the car, doing 115mph on French autoroutes in 38 degrees of heat didn't suit the engine.

You got stuck in France Mike? These days you could have gone and stayed at a camping site in Calais...;)

But that didn't put you off Z's though, did it Mike. Look at where you and Sandy are now with your latest car, it's gorgeous.:)

Tony.

No Mike we didn't get stuck in France but the engine was never the same afterwards. It leaked oil all over the place, so got rid of it and bought Mora
It didn't put us off Zeds at all Tony, we loved the experience of driving with the top down and that feeling of speed you have driving a sports car.
Nothing wrong with the 1.8 I was just asking to much of it, in England we never get to go above 70 for more than a few yards, to be able to drive at over a hundred for 70-80 miles is a real pleasure.

Mike

@EnthuZiaZT I think that is just called bad luck. Had 318i and wife had 316i, thrashed them to bits on the German autobahn, never a problem, oh, except the 318i, rad blew up when I kept it running waiting at Amsterdam airport to pick someone up.

you'd better expand on that @zedonist I said it in jest, now I'm curious!
