I went to view a 2001 1.9 z3 tonight and when i started it there was a sound like a fan turning which lasted for like 20/30 seconds then stopped, is this normal?

The car had 94k on it and seemed in good enough order except the engine management light came on which the seller says is an 02 sensor and i can get it checked out before i buy and i will. Took it out for a test drive and everything went well

is there anything else i should look out for?

Thanks in advance

Philip

Hi Phil, they are pretty bullet proof, the fan I assume will be the viscous but not sure why it would kick in if the engine is cold. Just check the head gasket is OK as there's been one or two stories on here of them failing. Get a code reader put on the car to check the engine management light. It may be historic and turn off after reset. If it is the co2 sensor it's not a big job. I've been meaning to do mine for the last four years!

Thanks i have got the hold of a code reader to check it out, the owner has told me that the 02 sensor was replaced about a year ago but light still on so iam hoping that whoever fitted the sensor just didnt clear the fault code after fitting. I will have a look for head gasket fail but engine seems clean and dry with no oil leaks and oil clean.
Should i be concerened about 94k? I have seen another 1.9 1997 with 50k but supposidly only done 7k in last 8 years and is a bit rough round the edges with a few body marks - just doesent seem to have been given much care and attention where as tho 2001 with 94k seems to have been pampered

:welcome: to the forum from West Cumbria. I'd go with condition and history as apposed to mileage. Cars that are showing signs of neglect could hide all sorts of issues. Bearing in mind the age of these cars that's not high mileage.

90k odd is nothing if it's been looked after. As Andy says condition and history over mileage everytime. Looks good on the pic.

Welcome - as others have said, read your codes and see what comes up.

You can check MOT history here https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history (not available until later today). Does owner have a print out of emissions test from last MOT - that will give some indication if O2 sensor at fault. I thought EML was self resetting.

Hi and welcome from me in Scotland another 1.9 owner. Which engine does it have . Is it the single cam m43 or the twin cam m44

If its an m43 no viscous fan only electric. The noise you will be hearing will be the evap pump operates when cold to draw some exhaust gases for reburn will post a picture of where it is later at work just now no zed with me .

Thanks for that, that makes me feel a bit better about it

Hi,
The 97 has only one O2 sensor and no engine manag light on the dash bord; the 2001 has two sensors: one before and the second after cat. If the owner replaced only one , it's not enough. BMW recommends changing the sensors around 100k miles, which is your case.
Good luck!
Dan
