Falken Ziex ZE950 A/S UHP All Season 225/50R16 $95 per tire.
A big THANK YOU! To all that replied. I would have wasted hundreds $ and countless hours fixing my grandiose ideas. Now let's close the thread before I change my mind.... grin once again thanks.
 
If side wall and comfort is what you are looking for, why not find some 15 inch rims and keep the car with in tolerances of the rolling road radius?

No rubbing headaches or worry needed.

There are plenty BMW 15 inch wheels out there and would guess a lot of them will be inexpensive as people tend to increase diameter of wheels instead of downsizing.
 
Well, to be honest, it's price. I'm a cheap son of a Ferrari and i need cash to spend on floozies, I'm so cheap I won't spend the money for a real dog. We do have matching hats though.

A set of rims only with shipping is a minimum $500, more like 900, I'm trying to stay below 400 for tires with installation. Also I bought beautiful looking 17" rims for my first z, then found out they were bent. Another 300 something to have them straightend. Who knew you could bend rims. Here's another gripe, remember when mounting, balancing and new stems were free? I also see the term "lifetime alignment" has gone extinct.

Used rims from an e36 3 series era in the uk are very very cheap and in the US I’d expect even cheaper. Craigslist, eBay and local breaker yards will have heaps of these for buttons.

Going for tires that don’t fit could cost more in the long run when you realise they rub and need to rethink/rebuy it all.

Yep, that's why I come here for "the knowledge" I may still upsize slightly to the 225 55 16s, believe it or not bmw's tire substitution guide says they're ok but not the first recommend. But probably won't. I still have to wait till December 9 for an installation date. I did just look around, not much availability for 15 inch rims here. The one steel rim i saw was 225. Yes dollars...
 
My 99 always had 225/50 on rear and 205/55 on the front.

I changed the rears to 225/55 which, according to willTheyFit.com give me a 3% speedo error. But my speedo was already over 6% out so now its actually more accurate.

Oh, and computer hasn't complained.
