@t-tony what about plugs or coil packs? It literally does it only when cold and then when warm it runs really nicely. Assume it would have a constant issue if either of those ?
I have had a look online at cam sensor The price and range of brands is huge. Is the original made by Siemens.

Are your fuel trims indicating rich or lean? Knowing this will give you the direction where to look next. Sorry to say, diagnostics are often time consuming and frustrating but ultimately satisfying when finally resolved. Remember, your engine has three simple requirements: fuel, air and spark. There's still a lot of things that need to be checked (and re-checked).

Also, running the vehicle for long periods in this condition can damage the catalyst - sorry again.
I thought the sensor showed those trims but I couldn’t find any setting.

Drove today and got an engine light and these 3 errors

Throttle/AFM plausibility - Is your replacement MAF sensor the exact same part number as the standard part?
The MAF packed in just after I got the car in 2021. As I literally knew nothing about it, the local BMW specialist put one on. They used one made by NTK.

Bosch or Siemens brand Mafs don't use anything else

You'd have to hope that a BMW specialist wouldn't screw up so badly as to use an incompatible sensor so you may want to park that particular path, for now.
With no other information, the indications are that your engine controller has determined that the airflow into the engine is not as expected. This would affect the fuel trims, going to maximum in the event of excess air (i.e. leaks) or minimum in case of restrictions in the intake path. Of these faults, air leaks are by far the most common. It appears that you have performed a smoke test to look for leaks but have not yet detected any issues. You may wish to try an alternative method of leak detection, such as the cautious use of a flammable aerosol (e.g. brake cleaner) around any likely source of leaks (e.g. all rubber hoses connected to the intake manifold, IAV, PCV, brake booster, etc. etc.). If you create your own small leak you can see how this detection method works - spray near your leak and after a small delay the engine note should change. If your Creator tool has a live data display you could also use this rather than relying on ears. That said, eyes and ears are good tools for this exercise. If you can't find any leaks then try again. If you are certain that there are no leaks then try again, spraying different areas. Finally... you get the idea.
You are currently at step#1 of the diagnostic path, there are plenty of other paths to take once you're certain there are no air leaks.

Never heard of NTK as a brand. I'll guarantee it only had a 1 year warranty ((if that), most cheap items only have 6 months. Not a case of it being incompatible, just cheap aftermarket crap. Buy cheap buy twice is a regular maxim on here.

Tony.

Thanks for the message.
It has been smoked several times. @Lee gave it a thorough check a few weeks ago. About 4 of us also watching for tell tale signs.
The other symptom is a very rich fumey exhaust while cold.

Thanks. It was very early ownership when the car packed up with a MAF failure. Left it to the specialist to sort so I wasn’t involved in choosing the part.
NTK are part of NGK

What price are they?

Tony.

Struggled to find a Siemens one.
I did too. Loads on line claiming to be ‘OEM’, but that just seemed to mean they were claiming their cheap knock-offs were OEM equivalent.
Eventually, following @colb ’s advice to go Bosh of Siemens I called Sopers in Lincoln and they sent me a proper Siemens one. Got a 10% forum discount too. It was a LOT less cheap than even the £130 knock-offs, but it works.

Be aware that for a 2.8 the MAF for the pre TU engine update is completely different to the post updated engine. Sopers can work it out from your engine or VIN number though.

They are out there, and you get what you pay for when it comes to sensors.

Looking online at company info I see Siemens bought VDO and rebranded as Siemens VDO. Siemens then sold VDO to Continenta.

Are Continental VDO MAFs up to scratch? Thanks

No experience of them to comment. But, the line of Heritage would suggest more than likely. Warrany given on parts is often a good guide.

Tony.

rmoconnor41 . How are you getting on with this problem
