ABS and ASC lights. Z3 2.8

So I was having a good look around the 2.8 I bought and noticed the ASC button didn't seem to be working. Pulled the speedo out today to check the bulbs and they'd been removed for both the ASC and ABS. Swapped them over and they're permanently lit up.

Any advice on where to start looking to resolve this?

Will read the codes through the week too.
 
Looks like they may have been taken out in 2011, it also seems strange that it passed MOT in 2014 and has got into the state its in I effectively one year as its not been tested since, and its only done 4000 miles since the test in 2014

Got the same problem on my sons 2.9 99. Changed all sensors, light still on! Talked to a fellow member at ZFest on Sunday, its the little black moduel attached to the ABS unit. You can get them second hand on ebay for £50. Swap them out and lights go off but they need to be re-coded to the car. There is a step by step guide on here somewhere. It is done through INPA/NIS. Meant to be quite easy!! Just waiting on lead from China to connect to car then I will let you know how we get on

and, as discussed on Sunday, here it is :

step by step Coding replacement ABS with NCS


1. Go to the main INPA start up menu and you will see on the right side the program called NCS …….. (don't open INPA)

2. Open NCS

3. In the file menu at the top select ‘load profile’

4. Select ‘Expertenmodus (Werkseinstellung)’ and press OK

5. Now press F1 (described as FG/ZCS/FA)

6. Press F3 (described as ZCS/FAf.ECU)


(In other words you want to interrogate the ECU's) What you will now do is select the chassis type and a module where you want to copy the code from, so


7. In the box that opens choose E36,

8. Choose EWS. This is where your cars code will be copied from (you can choose another but I used the immobiliser system)

After choosing this you should now have VIN number details filled in from your car, meaning this code is now selected and copied. Check they are correct. (If not start the program again until the details are correct)

9. Press F6 (back)


you will see the words "Get Coded" appear and "all Modules" however you do not want to copy this to all modules, just the replacement ABS ECU , so:


10. Select F4…. Process ECU

11. choose MK20… for ABS

12. press F3….. execute job



That’s it……………. Completed….. the coding is copied!

Brilliant walk through guide! Will just do the usual checks on the sensors etc. If that fails I'll get a replacement unit.
 
Just been and taken the control unit off. Part number is 1164897 and says ABS & ASC. I presume it's ok to just swap the black controller or would the other part (I presume it's the pump) need changing as well?

Just a bit further to this, I've been and read the codes and it says:

ASC-71 ASC: Pump Motor - at: vehicle speed 0 km/h - at: control not active - at: brake light switch not operated? Return pump B3450_00113
 
Common fault on control module is dry solder joints. If buying second hand unit I would recommend you get confirmation from the seller that the unit was working when removed from the donor and agree for return if NG as it may also habe dry joints.
Thhere is a guide either on here or .net on how to open and resolder.
The code I got for the module fault was 096. The code you have points to the pump motor so maybe more research is required before deciding the module is at fault.

The fault code for the brake switch is one that you get if you change the module and it hasn't been coded in.
I had a fault with my abs so now have 2 modules ( original and replacement) mine now sorted ( fault elsewhere) but if i put the replacement module in throws up a brake switch fault abs operates but as not coded in no traction control put back in original no fault codes

I've had the same issue with my V70 R, cut the lid off over the multi pin sockets and run the soldering iron over the pins and good to go, no coding required with Volvo fortunately.
 
Hello Z community,

Victor has been a brilliant little car for the last 4 years of ownership, However this year, he's decided he is going to produce all the problems in one go. I really need to book in with the ZedShed for help.!

First things first however I have come across this thread re-coding the ABS module, and have sourced a new pump and ecu, with the same product ID. I have also borrowed myself, a ODBII to PC cable, but believe i will need to acquire some software to run on a lap top to migrate the codes, could anyone point me in the right direction for the software..?
