ABS and ASC lights. Z3 2.8

Hello Z community,

Victor has been a brilliant little car for the last 4 years of ownership, However this year, he's decided he is going to produce all the problems in one go. I really need to book in with the ZedShed for help.!

First things first however I have come across this thread re-coding the ABS module, and have sourced a new pump and ecu, with the same product ID. I have also borrowed myself, a ODBII to PC cable, but believe i will need to acquire some software to run on a lap top to migrate the codes, could anyone point me in the right direction for the software..?

Welll at this minute, its speculation. The ABS / traction control lights have been coming on intermittent since I bought it. However in the last 3 months they have pretty much been constant. When I last had it serviced, there was a stored code for ABS pump.. However at the time, the lights were not on.

I now have a cable and software so I can get a pretty good Idea of what the problem is. Too be clear, I have not had an accident or done anything that would have caused it to, and I am probably jumping to conclusions before I have the diagnostics to back it up. But will know shortly.

Could this be the solder connections in the ABS module that break

The ABS module can have issues with soldered joints inside the module. I think I'm right in saying that @Antm72 had this problem and also an old member from near me did too on a 1.9 Z3.

Mine had been on and off for a while on my 2.8 and although it listed sensors at issue it never resolved anything when i swapped them.
If i remember correctly it listed the error code as pump electro static interference. I replaced the module with a part number matching unit and the light went out and did not come back.
Although the module fitted will extingush the light it will need coding otherwise it does not function, i had this done for £20 at a local BMW Indie.
The module can be repaired by BBA Reman it removes with 4 screws and no fluid issues as the module is a completley seperate unit.
 
Have just done mine. Cut the lid open, 2 minutes of soldering, and used sikaflex to put the lid back on..
Or pay BBA reman £190 for the same job, thank you very much.
Doing your existing, also means no coding needed

The attached doc may help with some detail in changing the ABS unit. Its just some notes from forum posts collected over the last year or so. Done in prep for my own ABS unit change. Hope it helps.

Right BM cables Arived software installed. Any advice on how to read the codes? I plugged in pressed F2 a dialog comes up with the various modules.. I believe your supposed to close this and another menu is supposed to come up.... It doesn't for me?
 
Here are pictures of the pump and module seperated. It looks like a bunch of electro magnets.
You can see the electical pump connection on the module at the end of the stem its the solder joints on the end as it meets the board that cause the issue and the pump failure code is due to the electrical break causing the pump to be lost in connection triggering the lights.

I realise this is an old threat, but as it's the one that brought me to this site, I thought I should add my experience!

My Z3 ABS and Traction lights were on, and I was struggling to read the fault codes, due to lack of communication with ABS module. So it seemed a likely place to start.

I was keen for a quick solution on this, so I disconnected my battery, removed the ABS module from the pump, and sent it away to Autotronics. I got my module back within a week, fitted to the car, and although was mildly disappointed to see the ABS light was still on, within a few hundred yards of driving the lights went off, and all is well! It must have had to take a reading from the ABS sensors.

Because they reflowed my old unit, there was no coding required after fitting, so just kept it simple!

The cost was £242.40, which given the urgency of getting it fixed, suited me well as it flew through the MOT. But I would like to have a go at repairing one of these myself now.

Have added 1K miles and so far..... it's still working.... :)
 
I've not actually found a good guide for reflowing this module. One of the reasons I didn't do it myself is because the only way I'd have of testing it, is to put it back on the car, whereas I imagine these repair companies will have a test harness set up to ensure they've done the repair correctly, and I was in a rush.

I'm not sure if that is all that Autotronics did to the board, or if they changed old caps etc. to prolong the life.

I might order one from eBay and chop it open to investigate. I've repaired these types of boards on ships, boats and diggers before... but without wiring diagrams etc. you can only go off optical inspection and best guess!

It looks like there are a few people on this post that have done this successfully though.
 
UPDATE

I managed to source a second hand module off ebay with matching part numbers for £40.
Fitted it yesterday (took less than 15 minutes).
Cleared fault codes with my Autel MOT PRO.
Road tested, no warning lights on dash and ABS functions as it should.

With regards to re-coding, is it necessary to do this with having a matching part number replacement and the ABS working correctly ?

Yes because the modules contain the cars Vin number in order to talk to other modules a used module fitted will contain the donor cars Vin so needs coding to yours.
