So my battery died and I have just replaced it for a new one. One installed I now notice that the alarm no longer chirps when arming or disarming. Can anyone advise as to any potential issues or remedy?

Ok, so this seems to have grown arms and legs now.
Prior to changing the battery the Alarm would arm and disarm with the separate two button key fob that I have. When it armed it actually chirpped a three note sound. It was actually quite a funny noise, definitely James Bond esq!
This now no longer happens , I just get a double flash of the indicators.
That’s now changed and the alarm seems to auto arm itself everytime the ignition is off. I can kill the engine, get out , close the door and not lock the car and the alarm just arms itself. It doesn’t sound a chirp when it does it and when I get back in the car the alarm doesn’t sound, but as soon as I turn the key it does.
the thing is doing my head in now.
I read in the manual there are customisation options that a dealer can programme and I wonder if the three note chirp was a special ? Does anyone else’s do this ?
any ideas ??

No, not that I know. I haven’t seen the module but it’s controlled by the BMW fob
I've gone through a lot of research regarding the alarm for my car (1.9 1998), and I can tell you that the alarm I have is just a rebadged Gemel GR48. The key fobs and instructions are the same.
Now, there's a passive self-arming feature (which sounds like you described), but that should be an install time configuration. Having said that, a cursory search in the intertubes returned at least one other owner having this thing happen to him after the battery on his fob died...
Non-BMW or BMW branded
key fobs that should work look like this:

Basically, I think you will have to contact a BMW dealer, or someone familiar with the Gemel alarms to reprogram it… The option provided to disable the function temporarily is:

Thank you for this, that’s great, everything is becoming a little clearer now! I didn’t know it was a rebadged alarm.
I’m guessing any programmed functions have been lost, now I need to find someone that can reprogram it!
