While I was picking up a spare belt for Z3 I also asked about a replacement radiator overflow return hose. Mine had gotten so brittle it broke just touching it!
The guy told me that the plastics in the BMWs will go brittle if the GREEN coolant is used and it is a very common problem once the vehicles are serviced by owners outside of warranty! It should be the BLUE coolant. This guy sounds like he gets a lot of business because of this green for blue swap. It has something to do with PH balancing.
This explains why the water pumps with the plastic impellers break down and the hose return lines like on mine!
