Changing suspension all round

Out of curiosity. I have to get newshock mounts. Will the poweflex mounts make any noticeable difference compared to the stock ones? I know that with the adjustablesprings that the ride will be harder so will the power flex help this?
They will make it harder still.so no,corner on rails though

Late one tonight Hugh? It is nice when you can go round tight bends like it's on rails though isn't it?

Tony.

PARTIAL SUCCESS

Hi Guys. So i have managed to get the shocks and springs on.
Only problem at the moment is for all the pushing, panting, sweating and swearing i couldn't actually adjust the coils.
I'm not to worried about this, as i am going to take it to my trusty independent BMW mechanic and ask him to give it the once over and make sure i have done everything correctly, and ask him to have a crack at adjusting them.
I took the car round the block, and there is definitely some banging when i go over bigger bumps, ( which is quite often as the roads are Sh**e in Kent.) I guess / hope this is wear i didnt put the rubber part back on the top of the coil.

Overall as it is it probably sits the same as before, possibly a few mm lower, but if we can get the adjusters working i know there is enough adjustment there to get the look i am aiming for

I wouldnt have done this without your help guys, so again thanks to you all.

Great job ! Is the banging in the rear ? Its normally top shocker mounts in the rear are they all tight ?

Hi. Yes I have to get new shock mounts tomorrow, so am not really going to test the car properly until i have fitted them. it was hard to say exactly where the banging was coming from. I hope it is the shocks as if its the suspension im not sure if anything can be done about it, as the original rubber mount just does not fit on with the coil adjuster :/

Well hopefully that will resolve it for you i remember getting knocking from them before i fitted them new when i fitted a coilover kit to my last zed. I can remember the pad not fitting but carn't remember if i just removed the bumpstop bit (cut it off) and used just the pad so there was no metal to metal.

Good idea. i was thinking about getting a dremel to the pad and maybe shaving a bit of the rubber off

If i remeber rightly its just the bump stop bit that won't fit through the adjuster i suppose you could dremel it down in size until you can fit it im sure i just cut it off !
Most appear to fit the kit without and have no real issue with noise so hopefully the top mounts are the answer but its always a thought with the pad

Also make sure your bolt holding the shock on has a washer. As gary found out with his this allows the shock to rattle.

It does make a heck of a rattle too, sounded like something was about to fall off the back end! :nailbiting:

So i have just taken Z to my mechanic, who explained that if i adjust the .... adjuster it will raise the car. I was thinking that if i adjust it downwards it will compress the spring, and he pointed out that it wont, it will just raise the car.....
Makes sense when i think about it, but now i'm thinking that i have basically wasted a lot of time and money as the car is only fractionally lower than it was originally..
So i am assuming that the Z's i see that are really low must have smaller springs ?? is that how it works?

You could try fitting the rear springs without the adjusters and both the rubber seats and see how that looks/rides. That would be the lowest position you'll get but obviously no adjustment.

Tony.

this was what I was trying to explain @waynerp these coilovers don't really do much lowering on the rear. You can remove the adjuster but the shock will bottom out on harsh roads. This is what I did with @GazHyde's car. Your right though the smaller the spring the lower you will go, but bare in mind the shock will need to be changed.

Hmmm ok. Think i will have a play at the weekend and try them with and without the adjusters and rubber pads. Would 18" wheels fill out the arch a bit more do you think?

Depends on the offset of the 18"s You wont gain much on the rear if I'm honest. I took everything out and it hardly dropped.

so can i assume that for example this little fella below has smaller springs, but the ride would be very hard ?

Yeah your correct, he wouldn't have the same coilovers you have that's for sure.

LOL im guessing they cost more than £170 as well !!
