just curious as to what the big round thing under the bonnet is, left side, at the front, near the front left corner of the cylinder head. looks like the top can be removed?

That is where you can plug in to test if you have any problems I think.
yup, it is the access port for the engine management modules. there will also be a smaller port under the steering wheel kickboard area.
Its an emissions pump it is a fan to all intense
in purposes.
I believe fitted for the U.S market suppose to deal with gases at cold start alot of people remove them and blank the engine port up as they can become noisy.

there are a few round top cap screweee thingys, pic with arrow will be needed.

yes thats the thing i was asking about. the port is at the other side a little further back.
Yeah its listed in real OEM as an emissions pump it removes excess gasses etc at start up.
