Having looked at various posts on here, I finally had a good poke round on my Z. I'm no mechanic, so help from my local body shop was needed! The pictures tell the story.

Looking good - from a distance!

Close up & there were signs of surface rust on all 4 corners of the sills, surface marks on the rear arches & an unsightly chip on the drivers door that was also threatening tin rot.

I was dreading the rear arches & front wings being rotten, but they were virtually perfect, apart from the aforementioned stone chip marks. The sills, on the other hand were terrible! They could be bent by hand & the rust had progressed nearly a foot from front & rear edges on both sides.

Fortunately, the inner sills had only very slight rust spots on the drivers side, with no signs of any problems on the passenger side.

The recommended solution was to remove all visible rust, then spray with rust resistant zinc (I'm not sure of the proprietary name). This was done to all of the surfaces on the inner panels, sills, the inside of the rear arches & front wings, and the inside of the doors. Afterwards, a generous layer of waxoil was applied to all of the areas. New outer sills were obtained from a breakers yard (in perfect condition) & given the same treatment.

Finally, all the affected panels were re-sprayed & lacquered. I'm delighted with the results. All I need now is for my shoulder to get better so I can drive her (I'm off driving due to a rotator cuff repair until the end of June :(), and some sunshine to show her off!

Pictures of the full car as soon as the sun shines & I can get her out!

Its still not bad for the age of the car. Just shows how well built the Z3s were

You did well to find some good sills from a scrappy. It's a good job to tackle now, rather than a few years down the line when it's started to get away from you.

I know what you mean about the sills. I was absolutely chuffed, especially as I had to trust his word that they were 'mint' as they needed sourcing quickly. I'd previously seen some on the web that were worse than mine & still for sale!

Thanks Gaz, I,ve noticed on my car the wings actually flair out from the sills at the bottom, so something is very wrong there!

If you could post some pictures of that Stu, and then I'm sure someone will we able to comment.

Tony.

Nice work!

Look great in the sun all polished up.

Can't wait to get my machine next week and polish mine!
Sills and wheels to be done on mine but it's gonna have to wait until I fix ASC and idle.
Probably a winter job to be honest for me.

Looks great. I want a red roof as I could do with a new soft top but BMW only make them in black now.

@Hugo, one of our members is changing out a red hood! Sorry can't recall who. Maybe it's still in good condition and you can pick it up! I thought of doing that myself but being in Canada the shipping is a killer. JIM

I don't have the money to spend on it. Its not leaking so I'm leaving it for this year. The Hardtop will be back on in October.

What kind of machine do you use? Will it leave swirl marks? Frankie

Looks amazing. I love that colour of Grey on the Z3s

I know that feeling too well! I want to change the colour of the top on my car to green but a shortage of green$$ will have to wait. Driving around with no back window and throw a tarp over it while parked works when raining. Good luck collecting for the new top!! JIM
