Removing it - the best method is to remove the rubber core and hacksaw out the ring, trying to press it out will stress the cast casing too much.

Pressing the new one in will need a very large tool, it must be around 80mm diameter.
 
well 14/ 17mm drain plug socket ordered today, should be a few days, i sorted out the front side of my garage, found my hydraulic jack i only used about 3 weeks ago hidden under a pile of wood in the garage.. that took me about 1hr as i thought it was in my other shed.... got a comfy corner setup with my heater, and carpet cushions, radio, tools, fags ( and i dont even smoke !!!!!), lagers fridge cooker etc... pics soon of the cosy winter setup...for winter maintenance... wooo hoo... diff oil change first if i can get the plugs out then diff cover off to clean up and give a good wire brushing and hopefully fit new diff bush.... no rush...

Going for OEM bush? No ones documented that on here take lots of piccys :D
 
I have cut mine out with a heck saw. (reverse the saw) I placed a new poly bush. But if you heat up your cover with a halogen lamp or a heat gun, you probably slide it in easily. When I did the bearings of my Peugeot 203 diff, I heated the diff up in a big pan of boiling water. The bearings just fell in their place.

Similar to fitting pistons onto con. rods. You heat the pistons in either oven or hot water and place the gudgeon pins in the fridge to make them contract. A slice off both ends of the cake!

diff drain socket arrived yesterday, going to jack the car up this evening, and try and remove the drain plugs, then get some oil.... once i know i can get the plugs out easy i going to remove the bush, and the diff cover and clean up the diff cover with wire brush in my pillar drill and inpect / replace bush with poly or original...

Don't forget to make sure you get the filler plugs out first!!

yeah got it jacked up on the driver side, and removed the spare wheel, made it so much easier to get at the drain plugs, filler plug and drain plug out no prob. oil dumped and to be honest doesnt look that bad, very smelly but gear oil is normally like that aint it..?

The drain / filler plugs dont appear to have any marks as if they been out before, so suspect either new ones were put in if ever changed, or its still original.... had to use two spanner method to get the plugs out, bit of hammering on the spanners shifted them ok.... did a quick visual on the diff bush and it looks good... but will have a better look tomorrow in the day when its a bit warmer....

one thing i did notice is that the exhaust silencer looks as though its going to foul the removal of the diff bush bolt is this nornal.. as i dont really want to be removing the back box unless absolutley necessary... there may be just enough clearance to get it out...

any thoughts on this... 1.9mm engine single back box...?

thanks on that i not sure what to do with the bush yet, seems to be divided opinion on solid / poly bush and original, i know that the poly bush is easier to fit with the diff in situ, and suspect the original bush may be a press fit... so depends on how far i get with removal of the diff bush, and or diff cover as to what bush i fit...

I thought most of the boot floor issue though was with the bigger m cars and not so much of a problem on the 1.9 / smaller motors, i have inspected my boot floor welds and they all appear to be ok at the moment.....

Yes hypoid gear oil is very smelly indeed. It may depend on how you jacked the car up, silly as that may sound. To do the Diff. bush you need to jack the car up under the diff. with a block of thick wood between the casing and the jack pad. Jack it up as high as you can and then place axle stands under the jacking points on the sills. then when you lower the car onto the stands the Diff. will hang down further and you should be able to access the bush quite easily. HTH.

For the boot floor spot welds to become an issue the car will have to have been well abused, even with a bigger engine. Fitting a poly bush in yours will not create any issues with the boot floor if the floor is already in good condition.

thanks on that never thought about how i was jacking it up... as i only looking at changing the oil for the moment, i just jacked up the one side but, makes sense what you say to let the diff hang free. I in no rush going to pick up some oil tomorrow, and when i get back in the evening i reposition my jack and get the car better supported on my axle stands and have a good look at the diff bush then, I can get a bar in there and see how bad it is... but suspect its original and will need changing, i just wondering if those strongflex poly bushes are two part as the polyflex bushes are, as cant see how to get those in if they are one piece.....
 
I suspect that it must be two part bush and steel insert mate.
