Engine Rattle when Warming Up - Diagnosis? ?

Having taken the head cover off and inspected the two tensioners i'm unsure it is the chain now. I drove about 40 miles yesterday on the motorway then put in the Wynns hydraulic valve lifter treatment, then drove a further 50 miles to work it round the system. I will listen later to see if the overall noise is better.

As for the loud rattle at 1500RPM and the temperature sensitive nature of it I may look in to the thermostat. It will be my first port of call with the listening stick. I think it is something as it reaches the temp it opens, causes the noise then as the water gets hotter the pressure increase stops it rattling.

I Had a similar noise with the viscous fan bearing a couple of years ago ? after the fan exploded and done the rad I changed to electric fan and larger rad its been fine since ...not saying that's the problem but in my case it was

Have you tried running the engine with the aux belt removed? If you haven't, you need to, to determine what could or could not be the problem.

Tony.

I guess I need to get it to make the noise, stop the engine. Take the belt off and see if it makes the noise again. Bit worried about running it without the water pump going

If its something that is present at a certain rpm you will know straight away with the belt disconnected it will be fine for a short time just keep an eye on the temp.

No, you need to have the belt off before you start up really. If that noise doesn't start it has to be something driven by the aux belt. My aux belt tensioner started making a real racket a few months ago and I was convinced it was in the auto gearbox, but it wasn't.
