2001 Z3 1.9 - Couple of months into Z3 ownership and enjoying it - have had the EML come on recently and getting the code 'P01070 AB Check Fuel Supply System' - have cleared the code but it has returned after a 60 mile + journey today. Any ideas / suggestions what it could be - have checked all hoses, etc and can't find anything obvious - the only thing I can think of is that I changed the petrol cap recently and it doesn't seem to seal as well as the old one, in that after filling her up there is a slight smell of petrol when driving and it doesn't seem as tight a fit, so could be letting air into the tank. Will obviously try running it with the old cap - but would this be likely to throw up this fault.

It's a possibility, and one that's easily ruled out.;)

Tony.

I suppose it could throw the fault as the car will possibly be sensing the pressure drop.
As said give the old one another go and see if it resolves..

Thanks for the replies - that's my first move replacing the old cap - the only reason I replaced it was because it was a locking one that meant another key to carry around - bought the replacement non locking one from Eurocarparts but as said it doesn't seem to be as tight a fit as the old one. Did a bit of searching last night and it looks like a non airtight or missing cap could cause the EML to come on.

It might be the fuel filter, Antm72. That code seems to indicate a weak mixture as well, it may be a small hole in your air intake pipe. Put your head under the bonnet with the engine running and listen for any whistling sounds.

Mike

I'm servicing it over the next weekend - including the fuel filter - so will see if that helps. Saw a Youtube clip last night where a guy was checking for leaks in his intake system and he pumped smoke into the air intake hose - you could see where the system was leaking by the escaping smoke. Might be time for a small bonfire :)

I would just feel around the hoses to see if you can find any dry areas that have gone porous and would crack under load. Rubber at the age of our zeds is starting to turn brittle now.
