Fault codes help please

Simon, I would try having a word with Andy (spurs fan in a coupe), he is breaking Z's and he has currently a 1.9 if I remember right. He is very helpful and a real nice guy to boot. He is likely to be posting some thing to me soon so it might be better if he sends 2 things in one parcel if that helps.

Tony.
Thanks Tony

I will pm him now if I can work it out.

Would be good to fix on a budget.
Plus pop over and meet up, face to a screen etc, ha.

Cheers

Simon

Simon, I/we can understand your frustration with all these things seeming to go wrong with your car. Just remember that help is usually a post away and you have some of the best tech minds right here. We all have had your car at some point and in my case too many times but I learned to turn it around and make it a chance to learn something new plus save money at the same time. So hang in there you're slowly getting to the end hopefully but in the end the cars are pretty old and other than a few cars here most still have something needs attention. JIM

There seems to be loads of different numbers on the items for sale on eBay.

Do I need the exact same number?
Which number is it in the pic?
Does this unit do abs and asc or is there abs somewhere else?
Is the controller the black box in the pic or is it somewhere else?

Sorry full of questions and just want to get sorted now without spending too much more money.
1 & 4. Yes the black box is the controller and yes you need the exact same part number and if possible from a Z3 - I had to get my replacement re-coded as it came from an E46.

2. The number in the picture is the controller the part with all the pipes is the pump and that has a separate part number on it - I think it was just readable on mine without having to take it out.

3. Basically the pump controls the pressure (on & off) in the 4 brake lines for both the ASC and ABS and the controller instructs the pump.

I managed to get one through EBay but had to double check the part numbers with the seller before buying.

Hi all

Can you help

Been looking into a replacement ASC all week.

I'm confused, not hard I know.

On research the part numbers on mine as not the same as on RealOEM.
Parts numbers I have are supposedly for a 2.8?!

Problem I have is do I buy one same as my part number or the same as RealOEM?

What I can't tell you is if previous owner tried swapping unit for one with wrong part number and then took the bulbs out?!

Is there a way to test my unit is communicating or programmed right with the INPATIENT lead/software?

It's quite common for the actual part numbers for the units fitted to the car to be different to those shown in RealOEM as mine were. When the replacement was fitted the ABS light went out immediately as this function is not coded but the ASC light stayed on until it was recoded. I don't know about testing as my diagnostic check just showed a fault with the pump.

An update.

Thanks to a lot of help from T-Tony this afternoon the pump and controller replaced with secondhand part off eBay with matching part numbers.

Was off a 3 series so was expecting to have to recode it when I got back from Tony's but happily the warning lights went off as soon as I started it to leave.
Fluid replaced as a bonus which makes everything feel a bit firmer which is always a good thing!

All I need to do know is get to the bottom of the rough idle as I'm still at a loss.
Plugs out and gaps checked tomorrow although they are new.

Anyone know what plugs are best if I decide to change them?

You will get some different opinions but you will not go wrong with these NGK IRIDIUM IX SPARK PLUGS BKR6EIX - bit more expensive but IMHO worth it.

Edit - double check NGK catalogue for your model

I had a rough idle recently /rough running. Particularly after filling with fuel. I found that the hose to the charcoal canister was perished and the fuel tank vent valve didnt work. When your car is running does it build up pressure in the fuel tank. Big hiss of air when removing fuel cap? Worth a check as mine manifested itself over a year gradually getting worse.

The guys on here helped me solve thatto which I am very grateful

Don't give in dobbo. To be fair you appear to be having more niggles than most. Sounds like your getting there now. My money is its something as simple as a split vacuum advance pipe or similar. I had an astra diesel as my daily driver before changing it for the Saab and it developed a major running floor. It lost most of its power and smoked like a chimney. After two separate mechanics plus myself went over it more than once scratching our heads it turned out to be a spilt the size of your thumb nail in a pipe hidden right down the back of the block. Cost of repair... £1.50!!. Check every pipe!

I think I have checked or replaced every pipe. with no manual it hard to tell.
its just hard to tell were to go next with no fault codes and havn't got any money left to book it in with a garage for them to fail to diagnose?!

it seems to drive fine which makes it harder. if it was lacking in power or something it may be easier to find.

I totally agree with @Grumpy in fact if you can take them off one at a time and twist them a bit as sometimes several very small tears add up to the same size wize as one larger one. As Dave says hang in there, you'll soon have a great little car that will just need regular maintainance for some time. I'd also replace any hoses that looks/ feels suspect it's a small price to pay for your sanity. HTH JIM

I have taken off fuel filler cap whilst running and makes no difference. no hiss when removing either.
checked hose from intake to charcoal valve and seems good, not blocked.
wondering if the valve may be faulty but cant keep buying parts just in case.

Give me the main issue, my neighbour is an excellent mechanic and runs a 325 conv now but had a 1.9 Z3 before it so may know a common cause. One can but try!

It has an uneven or hunting idle. Very occasionally when pull up it seems like it will cut out but never has yet. Evens out a bit but remains hunting.

Pops a bit when backing of throttle but that may be unrelated exhaust issue.
