For some reason my fuel gauge didn't move when I put fuel in the light is still on telling me I'm empty ?

The fuel sender unit in the tank over the years gets crud on the wiper arm, its quite a common fault with the Z3s, a couple of options spring to mind.
  • Add some form of fuel system cleaner to a couple of tanks of petrol, hopefully it will clean the electrical parts and the gauge will start working again.
  • Replace the sender unit!

Well it's been a few days and after using the fuel cleaner the gauge still don't work
Iv taken the fuses out and disconnected the battire after reconnecting the gauge moved to full but slowly moved back to empty arhhhhhhh
If you but your hand on the sender and turn the ignition on you can feel something move anyone no what it is one do I just buy a new sender ????

@Millhouse what fuel cleaner are you using ? I use redex as well as only running on shell v-nitro fuel. The fuel cleaner goes in a tank of fuel twice a year before a good run out. Keeps my baby sweet

@Millhouse That buzzing you feel is the fuel pump priming the system. The sender and pump are joined together (very basic design) I fitted a new one to my zed a month ago. when the fuel tank is low on fuel open the tank up and have a look.

Access is behind the drivers seat under the carpet (Vertically). If you were to change it, its a 20min job taking our time. You will see two fuel lines and the connector to the unit.

Long as the ignition is off you can unplug these no problem and inspect.

  1. Hi @Lee how tough is that screw on cap to remove? The manual states a special tool but looking at it I figure it's doable without one!
  2. Can this be done without dropping the tank?
  3. Thanks, JIM

You can if the fuel level is low enough Jim. Most tanks utilise these types of fittings and what you need is a large pair of water pump pliers. It's possible to make a tool for these caps quite easily when you have one off.

Tony.

Exactly that Tony. The tool I'm using is a relic. Used for removing oil filters but does this screw cap perfectly.

Thanks @Lee that's the kind of thing I post about so often. I learn about something new on this forum everyday. Sometimes it's pure technology, sometimes improv and sometimes a small glimpse into the personal life of a member. People on other forums I don't think get that! JIM

Are you calling @Lee a relic?

You've clearly not met him!

He's a big chap!

No HT / BMG innuendo intended!

Absolutely not, he's one of the people I most respect on this forum and as far as I'm concerned demonstrates what this forum's goal is. A source of tech info, friendly fun and the willingness to sacrifice one's personal time to aid others. If that's a relic then guilty as charged and I apologize @Lee. That was not my intent!! JIM
