OK, mainly because 'i can' or rather I thought I could! I tried to fit a pair if heated sport seats to my track car this weekend it's a daily drive of a mate of mine, so rather than leave nice seats doing nothing all wintertime thought I'd be nice!

Well, on taking seats out of donor car, saw they are facelift in a prefacelift so wiring has been scotch locked, not a problem, both seats go forward/backwards and up/Down. just not heated as the switches weren't even there.

Anyway

Fitted a new centre console as the old one had no blanks, removed all 4 seats, located what looked like the right plugs, got 2 prefacelift heated seat switches etc

Switches wouldn't go into the plugs, close but a bit of plastic surround stopped then, no worries I trimmed it off, ignition on - car won't start, blown 2 fuses, both the ' clock ' ones. So plugged the clock back in, same thing happened with 2 new fuses.

I gave up could see any other plugs to fit,

All I can think is that the cruise control has something to do with it, no idea why, I thought all cars had the right plugs for the right switches? or is there a different type if heated seats switch? bizarrely the switches fitted the donor car just fine!

Any ideas?

This is why I don't put cars together!

I've read somewhere that you can get adapter wiring for this problem from BMW Andy. I would try going back to the original situation ie unplug all you've added, replace the fuses and see if it will start again.

There are also 2 different swiches, yours are the pre facelift, not sure if multi plugs for them are different though.
 
I think @Synclare got around this with an adaptor harness from BMW to put facelift seats into pre-face lift and vice versa?

I bought a couple of wiring adapters from Sopers at around £50 each. There are some pics of what you get for your money on my sport seat thread but being a thick twonk I can't find it
 
Thanks for everyone's help, I know the base will need butchering.

But, I cant work out why a prefacelift heated seat switch wont fit into a prefacelift dash/centre console.
 
So you have the seat splugged into the car already right but switches do nothing?

Then I believe you may need a relay. On my 2.8 it was literally plug and play but I remember talk of relays needed in certain models - I think my car already has the relay as is has the winter pack (heated keylocks, window washers, mirrors and also had the heated rear screen queuing).

I've also done facelift into prefacelift, can't remember if I trimmed the plugs to fit but certainly there are only 2 identical plugs lurking back there so I doubt you've got the wrong plugs for the seats.

The switches in the facelift are all bigger (wider) than the originals hence not fitting the console.
 
Thanks @Dino D I was using trusty google on Saturday and found a thread on bimmer forum with people like MyRedZed contributing saying I needed an orange relay in the bottom right space, so fitted one this afternoon, still not sure what went wrong. In Ash's thread he has a light green one fitted in the same space as I used.

The thing I can't work out is why I couldn't find the right connectors tucked away behind the carpet near the gear lever, I'm sure I had all teh possible loom searched.

Either way the car is back together now and I wont be bothering again. I'll just sell the seats.
 
do the wire colour match up from the under the seat all the way to the plugs for the switches? If not then it's not the right plugs I guess and they are still hidden somewhere under the carpet.
 
Are you sure the plugs you have found are for the heated seats ? On the prefacelift the plugs are often found between the seats to the rear of the console on my early prefacelift they were....

Nope, not sure, in fact now pretty sure they aren't - mainly as I never heard of different switches/plugs, I've broken so many I've never seen anything other than the purple ones.

Bloody annoying, wasted hours!

Didn't get much further than getting the car started again - blown fuses for the 'clock' wouldn't even allow the car to turn over, dash/ignition lights came on - but complete silence!

Was getting dark and the car had to be back together for Monday morning commute.

'Might' have another go over Christmas if I get bored, very bored!
