Hi,can you help please with your experience on insuring your car, mine is a 1997 44,000 mile 1.9 in very good condition,if I have an accident will the insurance company just have a notional value of it and right it off for less than I think it's worth or can I insure it for a certain figure and have it repaired, thanks.

You can broker an "Agreed Valuation" with some insurers. As @GazHyde says, @BMBabe will see you right.

Standard car insurances will start with a Glass's Guide figure and adjust for mileage as per the guide. I've not looked in one for years but you might even find the Z3 is out of it due to age, I can't remember how old they go. The fact you put £5k in as a value won't override it.

Agreed values do tend to be with more specialised policies like a classic car one, rather than the avarage "tesco.com" policies. My brothers car is on an agreed value classic car policy and for the last few years the value has risen significantly. Each year he increases the value and pays a bit more, but the total loss value is fixed and agreed.

You do need to be able to justify the higher value in the event of a claim though. You can't just say you think it is worth £20k, when an average one sells for £2k and a real nice one makes £4k, and still expect £20k! We could all make a nice living out of that.

I had a no fault accident some years back and my car, which I was trying to sell at the time for £3k, was written off. The other chaps insurers offered me £4.2k for it . I still asked for £40 for the diesel and got that as well. Rest of the claim went a bit sour though :yuck:.

smiffy, thank you for your reply, when I see some of the photos on this forum there are some beautiful cars I was hoping that you could protect your car from being written off for a repair bill of a couple of grand, prompts the question of why have fully comp ins

Hi Joepig, i have an agreed value insurance of £7000 with heritage, policey was a bit more but not excessive. had to send pictures & tell them what had been done to the car

Hi @joepig

well, I sincerely hope you never need to claim on it, but if you do, remember;
  1. that the car is actually yours even though it might have been damaged!
  2. in the eyes of an insurance company, "she" is just an object, a liability, and when damaged a problem.
  3. they want the easiest and cheapest way out, they don't want to own an old and damaged BMW!
Assuming this hypothetical damage is minor but still a financial write-off, there is no reason why the insurance company won't allow you to keep it and negotiate a reduced settlement incorporating the residual value of the car, directly with you.

Over the years, I've found insurance companies to be reasonably fair, it's only when solicitors or "claims handlers" get involved it all gets messy.

i had somebody drive into the back of my old honda, insurer was tesco. it was just a damaged rear bumper which you can pick up on ebay for around £40, however the insurer said they would only use new parts and as mine was a jap import it would be unfeasible:eek: if not impossible (the car was over 20 years old) so i asked the assessor if possible not to wright the car off, he said if that was what i wished it would be fine, tesco then sent me a cheque for the value of the car plus adjustments for low mileage, allowing me to buy the ebay bumper with a load left over:) and it was never recorded in the cars history:whistle:
the numpty that drove into the back of me said (while we were stood at the side of the road swapping details) i dont believe it, i have only just got the bonnet repaired after the last roundabout rear-ender:eek:=)) ok calling someone a numpty is abit harsh but we all make mistakes and to not learn from them - this is why he is a numpty

littlefeller thanks for the reply, don't feel to bad about calling him a numpty i'd have had my hands around his throat

@joepig Hello I can help you with your insurance!!! We do agreed value policys, so if your car is a total loss you dont get peanuts back you get what the car is worth (the agreed value at policy inception). Also if you need to make a claim you can use BMW with no hassle as our insurance scheme allows this, also windscreen replacements can be done through BMW  It also includes FREE of charge Track day cover :D

Please do give me a call and I will be happy to help you like I have with other fellow Zedders  @GazHyde @Mnbrennan @Brian H and others are very happy with their cover ;)

how about windscreen cover, im on my 3rd screen this year:mad: its getting to be a real pain (caused by stone chips, im sure there is an aggregate supplier some where along the road that i travel)

"claims handlers"
Otherwise called "Loss adjusters" or in my opinion "Robbing Bastards" who make money by screwing you out of yours. Been there, done that, don't want to do it again.

Tony.

I was meaning those supposedly helpful companies, for example Albany Assistance, who kindly arrange everything for you, like the over priced hire car that you are actually liable for, who sell your injury claim to the highest bidding firm of solicitors rather than the best qualified, who hire Doctors for medical reports that are both deaf and don't know left from right...... aarrgghh, don't get me started.

But to be fair, i've never had a problem with a loss adjuster other over the replacement of a part worn tyre!

It's a long story......but they essentially do the same thing, with the same result. Separating you from your money.

Tony.

When my first Zed got front ended.. I was offered £2.2k... Which I laughed at.. I flatly refused to accept it.. I then had lengthy telephone calls and called around a lot of dealers.. Glasses Gave £2.2k and he was not going to offer a penny more.. So I argued and said.. ok. Insurance Assessor.. you replace my car with a exact replacement I am happy with as per the terms of the insurance I took out.. I got a chq for £3.7k.. So stand your ground and argue like hell. Its worth it..

Use 'I buy Any Car' and 'Value My Car'. Then have a good laugh. They value a low mileage, immaculate Z3 2.8 automatic at between £1000 and £1800.

Talk to BMBabe Stacey she saved my wife £160

it's outrageous! @BMBabe explain yourself!

just looked at the Manning UK website.

There are dedicated sections (in blocked capitals) for TVR, Porsche and Aston Martin. There's a section for "Classics", but poor old BMW dumped down in "Other"!

Have a word will ya and get ZRoadsters mentioned in Classics! :D
