m52 tu rattle

i have a z3 2.8 twin vanos engine
it has a noise from the front of the engine
when started from cold no noise
after approx 2 mins as it warms up a noise starts
like a bolt being spun around in a can
once hot stays
does it on tickover
when revs are raised seems to go away
cant really hear it when driving even with roof down
sounds awful when hot
any ideas
much appreciated

Could be Vanos rattle, search up on you tube to find the noise and see what you think.
Could be DISA valve
Maybe timing chain tensioner but they don't normally go on these engines

Sounds like VANOS rattle to me. I had it on a M52TU engine.
- Anti rattle rings in the VANOS rebuild helped but did not completely fix it.
- Replaced the VANOS "Cups" and the problem was gone.

First job - remove the alternator belt. The water pump, pas pump are also driven from it. If the noise goes away, it's one of these or a pulley.
