Main dealer markup on a BMW Z3

It's not often you get to see how main dealers operate, but a while back there was a chap on Facebook looking to sell his dads low mileage Z3 3.0i Sport with just 20k. There was much discussion as it was starting to rust out on the sills and wings, but the guy was adamant that BMW would buy it for way over what anyone had suggested. If I recall @yalden said he would eat his shoe if he got that price.

They even bought it sight unseen. Thinking if they had seen the rust before, they may well have revised the figure.

So below is the actual cheque he got given when they came to collect it.

It's now on Sytners website for £17,000 - rust and all... :confused:

Theres a beautiful 2.0 on gumtree at the moment 20k and pristine at £4200 its a steal lovely car the inside looks not sat in.
Shows bmw think the Zeds value is there good news.
Edit less miles, smaller engine..

Not sure I like the idea of prices on our cars going up to be honest.
They are cheap to buy & run reliable up and coming classics at the moment and I didn't buy mine to make money on.

Just for fun and to be part of a great bunch of people who own and run them.
Looking at that advert people will be too scared to take them out the garage and that's not a good thought.
 
Looks like Sytner may have a better handle on the potential market for all those vehicles that are approaching classic status.

I took my Z into the local BMW dealers for what they called a "free summer check". Whilst it was in, I asked if they would provide me with an insurance valuation, only to be told that they wouldn't be able too as the car was too old !

How ridiculous, Especially on your M.
 
The question I ask is where the dealer perceives that huge, excessive value to be. Is it the model, the low mileage, the spec of the car, a combination or something I'm not quite understanding. It's a huge buy price and a rather ridiculous selling price.

I love my 2001 2.2 Sport, with M-suspension and limited slip diff et al, however if a BMW Dealer hit me with anything like that buy price, I'd wrap it in a bow for them and fill it with sweets before they collected it.
 
Surely they cannot expect to sell it for anywhere near that price, so I wonder what they're up to. Are they having an audit and marking up prices to make their stock value higher than it is in reality? Mind you, £8,500 dealer's buying price is remarkable. My 2.2i Sport is a year younger and has only about 47k miles so maybe that would fetch a similar price?
 
Absolutely ridiculous price IMO, I could see that the dealer could maybe make a small profit on the 8.5k but guessed they would need to wait a while, perhaps the recent hike in price is to cover the cost of the bodywork!
 
Get in quick whilst you can folks. Some time off yet but just look at the prices for the Ford RS models. Galactic prices ( hands up that had one and sold it for a song and still wish they had it). We're not a million miles behind, IMHO.
 
I was the biggest skeptic and admit to saying I'd eat my shoe if any dealership offered him £8k. Thankfully he actually got £8.5k which meant technically I could keep my shoe firmly on the end of my foot.

The car was originally priced on Sytners for £15k however at that time they still hadn't collected it from the seller so I can only assume they've raise the price now the car is in their possession.

I think it's a ridiculous amount of money and can't see them making much, if any, profit over their purchase... but only time will tell!

I'd imagine the value primarily stems from the low mileage. My Sport is better spec'd and has none of that sill rot but with close to 80k I doubt they'd have any interest.

A Series 1 Escort RS Turbo recently went for £60k! The Coupe and ///M boys and girls will feel it first but it's a while before us mere mortals get hit, I think.
