New Tyres

I decided to go for the Eagles from my local tyre fitter today. I went down to order and he asked if the rears were a different size as they usually are. On checking, they are all the same size 225/40/18. Now it's only a 1999 1.9 but the 18" replacement rims (I've had for 10 years bought s/hand) look great and came with tyres on, and as we don't do much over 4000 miles per year, what I would like to know is, is there any good reason to change the size of the tyres on the rear.

Is the rim width the same front and rear?

I have 225/40/18 on my Breytons all round which are 8.5" wide so are slightly stretched.

My new wheels (108's) have the same size on the fronts but are 8" wide, and the 8.5" rears are 255/35/18's.

Hi Gaz, Yes all four rims are the same size, and I haven't had any problems with the current tyres or any handling problems either. Just seems a waste of money to pay extra for wider tyres when it's never really driven hard. I know the original 17" rims and tyres were all the same. I'm not really sure of the rim width so will take one off tomorrow to check.

Just done a check on the wheels and gave all four of them a good clean while as was at it. The wheels are all 8J x 18 Made by Routecompany from Italy (anyone know this make?) They have various no's cast on them, but two have 23P19 and two have 23M20 stamped on them,anyone know what it means.

So those are the same as my current fronts, so I'd not personally not go wider. I'd also agree and stick with what you know - if it ain't broken and all...
