Take wife's car to garage for fuel- return journey 3.2 miles.
Take TFS (Z3 2.0 rebody) to same garage- return journey 13.2 miles.
???

Something ain't right a strange one.

On the rebody didyou change any of the drive line components.
What distance does Google maps put the journey at.

Stephen.

Sorry I originally laughed at this as thought it was a joke i.e travelling a longer scenic route in yours and direct in the wifes! Thats what I do lol.
But can see it was a serious question!

I didn't think I was the only one...

..so I was right first time, phew. Have been caught out on here before getting totally the wrong end of the stick !

I do also find that if you clean it and make it nice a shiny- the mileage goes up even more...v strange things these Zeds

I now have a real problem- the odometer LCD is "bleeding" downwards and starting to obscure the numbers.

Is it possible to replace the display module or do I need a replacement instrument cluster?

If either of the above- are they "plug'n'play" getting the data from the ECU or does anything have to be reprogrammed?

Are you a brave man @IanA?
The kind that dives in a tank full of sharks?
Alternatively do you speak “ISTA”?
Because one way or another, trying to fix this is a lot of trouble.
shark tank solution is to disassemble and replace the cluster (because if it bleeds orange even if you glue it tight to the surrounding it will eventually start to kill its leds and will need replacing)
ISTA solution is get a used odometer and use coding magic to match the mileage between ecu and new odometer. Unless you do not care, so its a direct swap.
Cheers.

I have a quote of £200 to fix a cluster in my E36 (much the same as Z3) from Totaltronics BH20 4JL. Have similar issue, mileage/trip numbers sometimes bleed/blur. Not got around to booking in yet though!

Yes and no to those, Zeph.
My only worry is when it's MOT time and it may become an issue. If not this year then sometime.

Update- the last three numbers of the mileage are now obscured and the dreaded red spot has appeared!

The procedure on the bimmerforums link looks straightforward. Just need a round tuit...

Was it Noel Edmonds or DLT, one of them used to give these out on the Radio 1 breakfast show.

Mot will not be an issue.
If the mileage cannot be read for whatever reason goes on the certificate as Not Displayed

Don't worry, be happy.
Just go for a spin in your Z3, with the top down of course.

I use a Creator scanner to check things on the OBD occasionally.

Is there a true mileage (or in kms) register in the OBD that another type of scanner or INPA can read?

I've seen this on other cars but they were of a later manufacture.
