My 98 2.8 z3 is due an oil change

5W-40 seems to be the recommended oil, is this correct?

I was wondering what brand oil people put in their own car?

Thanks Chris

I am not an expert nor a mechanic, just an average someone from the interweb.
I am using Liqui Moly Molygen 5w40 and had it checked by Blacstone Labs.
Compared to the Mobil1 Super, the Liqui Moly sample had better viscosity and better oxidation results, so I am using this to all my vehicles.
cheers.

This is brilliant value for money ..plus there is 10% off at the moment. You need 7l…£41!
PETRONAS Syntium 3000 E 5W-40 Fully Synthetic

I use 5W-40 Synthetic in mine as well, so far great results using synthetic oils in my vehicles.

Good to know
Which brand are you using?
I like Castrol but I also use Costco oil when its on sale.
I Don't particularly go towards the more exotic oils some here use, oil is oil in many cases, there are additives that can be mixed with the oil if you want or need certain properties, for example I use a 1/2 can thickener to prevent oil seep at my valve seals, at 145K miles the car needs a little help in that area and a rebuild is out of the question for me right now.

I use this,

Worth shopping around to get best price.

Tony.

As long as the viscosity is correct the brand isn't that important, the most important thing is to change it regularly. That said I always use fully synthetic. Just an opinion.

And this brings the old question, how regurarly is regular? Every year regardless of the mileage?
Never had a solid answer for this...

Agree, me I go with 5k or annually whichever comes first.

I’ve always used Castrol Edge 5W30LL as it was the specific oil that came up on the Castol oil finder for the M54 2.2, but maybe it makes no difference what you use because the Opie Oils product finder seems to think that 0W30 to 5W40 and any combination in between would be acceptable. In my case, the frequency of oil changes is pretty straightforward, oil service every year and almost another full change in top ups at around 250ml per 250miles!

5W40 in my Z4 on 98kmiles, yearly change even though it doesn't do a lot of mileage. The Z3 is still on 5W30 on 44k miles again yearly. Both running on PETRONAS Syntium from Opie Oils.
