Just thought I would share a coupe of piccies of a seriously over heated M43 1.9 engine, You would think a driver would twig something was amiss long before it got to this stage !!

The inlet manifold mating surface literally melted on cylinders 3 and 4

The above picture shows the water pipe on the rear of the cylinder head

How do you let things get that far?

That must've been stinking hot Adrian. It must have been driven by a moron.:(

Tony.

Thats mad it most have been done in anger or stupidity.
More likely stupidity and not watching what the gauges where saying.o_O

Ooh that looks painful
As said it must have been glowing hot for quite a while to do that much damage .

Makes me wonder if an engine loses so much water the temp sender no longer has anything to measure?

If the coolant level is too low, below the level of the sensor, then the temperature sensors can't read the temperature of the coolant and send signal to the OBC. This can effect emission readings at the M.O.T. too.

Tony.

That is just nuts, my old 318i started to cook itself and the engine management shut the engine down.

If the engine runs with no water the temp sender will start reading the heat inside where it's fitted caused by the high metal temp of the engines casings

Was there any oil left in the engine? I'd bet that engine was a smoker for quite a while before this ended it's life when it finally puked out any water left in it if any at all! JIM

Without knowing the circumstances it's hard to judge the driver. However I'd say given the high rate of overheating on BMW's after a certain age it's easy to judge BMW for cr@p parts - they should put 'entire cooling system' renewal at the 100k service. But they don't as they out of warranty.
Knowing the cr@p plastic they fitted for cooling parts they could have fitted a buzzer at least. I mean why have a buzzer to tell you it's below 4c outside but not to let you know the plastic cooling system has failed?

im not so sure it was dry, why has it overheated at just the one side, if it were running on carbs it would be more understandable, then you would say it was running lean on the one side (reminds me of kwak tripples:)), how odd.
suppose if the water pump had failed then the side where water goes in would be slightly cooler even without the water actually circulating, but then looking at the second pic it looks burned, like as if it WERE dry.

the most burned end - was it at the back?

Oil was present to the correct level. The car's history I didn't get to know. I just acquired it with the cylinder head and radiator missing. I fitted the engine from the one I broke up in order to put the zed back on the road. It lives to cruise another day :)
Only warning light that was on was the airbag light, heaven knows what's stored in the memory! A borrowed airbag reset tool showed seat belt pre tensioner fault, changed both with known good ones from the one I broke up but light remains on. Cleaned up wiring plugs (which interestingly had insulation tape around them indicating past problems) but light remains on still.

Have you still got the squib (clock spring) off the car you broke Adrian, could be that which is faulty?

Tony.

I should know having dismantled one but where does the module live? Centre console?

Sorry Tony, not with you there. What is a clock spring aka squib?
Sorry mate, the Squib is the part on the steering column with the cable wound around inside it which allows the steering to turn while keeping a contact. You may remember Steve (Bozzy) let his turn when he changed steering wheels? Look in the thread Royal steering wheel.

Tony.
