I took my daughter to the airport the other day and on the way back the temp guage rose up from the usual middle position by about half again. slowed down to about 65 and it dropped back to normal. Once there I tried to speed up again and same thing happened. This is a 1.9 M43 engine with 113,000 miles on clock 2001. Its had a new rad.
I am thinking its the water pump and thermostat, as have probably not been changed before!,so got them today from ECP with the discount.
Any advice on fitting them? things I need to look out for? Do you think this will cure the problem or is it something else?

It may be the water pump or the stat.At the mileage it certainly won't hurt.
If the pumps week and the thermostat even a little stuck it would do what you suggest.
Think your on the correct path.

Thanks mate. Thought it might be. Any known problems to watch out for when changing them?

Never changed one on a 4 pot i believe they have a threaded bolt hole in them used to release it feom the block you screw a bolt in and it pushes the pump clear of the block.
Just make sure you get a good bleed on it when you refill it as they can be a pain with air locking sometimes raising the front of the car alittle helps push it to the highest point / rad bottle to release any blockages.

Yes got myself a couple of M6 bolts to help the pump off. Hopefully it will come off ok and I wont have any problems with the bolts on either of them!!!!

Fingers crossed it all goes without a hitch

I'd also be checking the head gasket. I've heard of a few going on the 1.9. Hopefully it won't be but worth a check all the same..

Whats the best way of checking that? I have had no other overheating problems.......its not using water....fine in traffic....just the problem on the motorway

Sounds good then to be fair. Easiest way is to take the oil filler cap off and see if there is any white gunge on it. Also look in the expansion tank and see if there is a rainbow effect caused by oil and water mixing.

hI @MRH1966 I have just helped @Faheem change his pump and thermostat. If the same fixings as his is the M44 engine one of the bolts needs a 6mm hexagonal allen bit.
The 6mm bolts to extract the water pump need to be approx 60mm long as one of the tapped holes is close to one of the casting on the pump and the head of the bolt will foul this casting.
Probably worth back flushing the radiator with a hose as well to clean any sediment out.

Just checked oil cap and on residue.....thanks for the info........rad only changed in June/July when I got the car so should be clean enough......worth doing though........cheers

All sounds good advice, as an addition just check that the plastic valance/undertray at the bottom and in front of the rad isn't missing, without it air can spill under the rad instead of being directed through it.
Is that a Carlight?

Will do. Thanks. No it's a safari, one of the last ones they made (1982). Behind that I have a 1963 safari, 1972 sprite and a 1979 sprite europa, all in different stages of restoration!!!!!!

When @Brian4 helped replace mine, we didn't use any sort of gasket glue, just put a new o ring on the new pump and cleared off any gunk from where the thermostat was seated.

Quick updae.........Thermostat was the problem, totally knackered!!!!!........Changed water pump to be on safe side.......Slight problem with thermostat housing bolts.......one snapped!!!! .......had to drill out and re tap hole.......nightmare!!!! started at 12:00 and finished at 9:30 last night......all ok now

Pleased it wasn't anything major. Bit of a sod with the bolt but they are old cars and can throw these little tests at us from time to time.

With something like that you should always try to tighten the bolt a little before undoing. It sounds a bit backward but often that small amount of movement will free the bolt.

Tony.

@Grumpy yes I agree they tend to throw the unexpected at you at times. Used to work on triumph stags a long while back and they were a nightmare for snapped bolts!!!
@t-tony done that but still snapped!! Tight little so and sos. Lucky only one snapped
