At long last after 18 months of development and testing, I can now advise there is a solution to the problem of sustaining a punctured wheel.

A wheel carrier capable of securing a punctured wheel to the boot lid will now be available within the week, at a very reasonable £74.95 plus postage, I have negotiated a 10% discount for Z roadster members which is available until 31/12/2023, to obtain the introductory discount, a code will need to be entered at the checkout.

I will list the code and how to order along with some photo's of the carrier fitted to a car in the coming day's. the wheel carrier is UK manufactured using tried and extensively tested materials and can safely carry up to 20kg, No need to 'put the wife/passenger on the bus with the punctured wheel', or even have to wait for roadside assistance.

I have read countless articles on this forum and others about the inconvenience and problems that a punctured wheel can cause. 'Problem solved'

Although instrumental in the initial idea and development of the carrier, I will make no personal gain from any sale. My involvement is purely to enable Z roadster members to benefit from an introductory discount which is not available to any other individual or forum.

Further details and pictures within the week.

A 17-18" rear wheel and tyre would weight about 24kg or thereabouts?

Hello SV8predator,

Great point,

My comment about 20kg was a bit tongue in cheek as I do not have a detailed breakdown of the recommended safe carrying weight, the product detail and fitting instruction I believe should have been finalised today, however I can confirm during lengthy testing a multitude of tyre and wheel sizes were used from 15" to I believe 19". 'I should have waited until I had the full breakdown'.

I will obtain recommendations tomorrow and post on the forum to dispel any concerns you may have regarding weight carrying capacity.

I would also like to make the point, the carrier is not recommended to be used as a permanent wheel carrier and is designed to get you to the nearest tyre centre or home safely. minimising inconvenience.

I take it this folds up and can be slipped behind the seats or such like when not in use?

Hello

I have been able to obtain further detail in answer to your question, during testing one of the wheels used was an original wheel from a VW Touareg which I believe weighs in at 28- 30kg? A genuine rim fitted with tyre.

The webbing used to strap the wheel is a tried and tested material which has been used in similar applications since 2008. The webbing strength and breaking strain is far far stronger than any wheel that will be carried on any bootlid.

Regarding safe carrying weight, this has not been determined, however a figure of 25kg's is 'recommended' not because of breaking strain or safety fears but to limit any possible damage to the bootlid, this will safely cover any oversize 18" wheel fitted with a 255 35 18 tyre to your Zed.

I would assume that 19" wheels will probably weigh about the same.

Sorry but there is a slight delay in finalising the fitting instruction and until they are available they cannot be offered for sale, this should be resolved by the latest Friday. Once I have spoken to the manufacturer and been given the green light they will be on general sale to everyone who wishes to purchase. I already have mine.

Please note the code for the 10% discount will be made available and will be offered until the 31/12/2023, this offer is only for Zroadster.org members.

If anyone wishes to ask any further questions I will do my best to answer promptly.

Hope I attached the correct captions to the right photo's

I can do better, sling it on the passengers lap for free =))

Thanks for sorting this @Dakar Z3

I’ve been running without a spare for years on the Z.
But on the family bus I had a minor blow out which wasn’t repairable road side with the foam and tyre plug kit. Luckily it has an actual spare so changed the tyre over.

Only had to change a tyre roadside about three times on 25 yrs but it’s been handy to have a spare when it was needed.

With the number of potholes increasing at an alarming rate, even on dual carriageway/motorways, I’m feeling less confident being with a spare these days.
The only place I don’t hit a pothole is on track nowadays!

Think I need to find my carrier and wheel and put it back on - with this solution at least I don’t have to dump the flat wheel / passenger in the bush (!)

I can't fault the ingenuity of this but as I have just renewed my car insurance they seemed to be very explicit on "any mods". Sorry if this sounds negative, as its really not meant to be, but I think this would impact one's insurance ? ...sorry if I have got this wrong but it seems as a change for the original Z3 design.

Well, I would say this is not a permanent modification, so I don't see why insurance would be impacted. Except if you are planning to have a wheel permanently sitting on top of your boot lid… ;)

Do you have to tell your insurers if you have a bike rack, or a roof rack?

Thank you for the question,

The carrier easily folds and can be stored behind either seat, This was an absolute must during development.

I know you've said it in jest, but it's maybe not such a great idea

I don't know if anyone else remembers this story from 2010 when a woman died, when she was holding a tyre inside the car

I remember it oh so well, this exact topic we discussed during the development of the carrier, hence reiterating with 'SAFETY' in mind ............

Thank you, a sad reminder.

I should have mentioned, the discount code 'zroad' is valid until 31/12/2023 and can be used against any boot Bag product.

Blimey i guess the moral of the story is to deflate it.
Anoither alternative is to cut the tyre off and put the rim in the boot.

Surely if it wasn't deflated you wouldn't have taken it off the car?

Tony.

Does the carrier come with a label telling you to release any residual pressure from the tyre?

Tony.
