Roll over hoops.

I'd thought that with the plastics @t-tony but mine is a pretty bog standard colour so wouldn't have thought it'll be to much if a problem. Is there any easy way to found if I have the chassis holes without stripping everything down?
I honestly don't know mate, as you'll have seen I fitted the "Style" type bar and had to remove the outer turrets where mine still fit in the factory holes/sleeves. That's why I'm not too sure whether a wind deflector can still fit in front of roll hoops or not. Obviously I've lost the use of my centre storage bin but can still use the small forwards facing one. To know for sure if your car has the mounting bolt holes I'm guessing you will need to remove the centre bin as in the pictures that Mike kindly posted, unless anyone know differently?

Tony.

Your car is the same as mine so it should have them. Mine is a 97 car but first registered in 98. You need to take the centre box out to see though.

Looking at h/t's link I think even I'll be able to manage that. Well I guess that is the place to start then. I hope your theory is right, but in some cases there doesn't seem to be any logic at the point of build. One car may get a certain something and the car next to it won't. Fingers crossed it does!

With the 1997 introduction of the all-aluminum 189-hp M52 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine (3 and 5 Series sedans with the inline-six would soldier on with a cast-iron block for a couple more years), the Z3 upped the performance quotient considerably. Along with the added power, staggered 17-inch wheels were added to the options list and larger ventilated front disc brakes became standard on the six-cylinder variants, which all got roll hoops behind the seats. BMW widened the rear end with muscular-looking fender flares to accommodate the wider track of the six-powered car.

As far as I am aware, cars built in September would be to the spec of the next years model.
Mine was registered Oct 96 so it could have been a 97 model but an M44 so no role hoops and I was told that if I wanted to do the mod, I would have to weld the two center turrets to the chassis as my outer turrets were for my Type1 wind deflector.

@hard top that link is a great read. Many thanks

That's a cracking dig out h/t. Just checked the sticker on my suspension strut and it's a June 98 build so should fall in line with your findings.

You say show hoops? I assume they are purely for show? I'm wanting to fit them for the safety aspect rather than for asthetics. Obviously I do want them to look good.
You dont drive fast enough for the safty aspect =))

Yes if your car is a 97 or earlier they won't be there, if it's a 98 or later the holes will be there. On the earlier cars it is the outer turrets that are not present. They do appear on all Z3 98 onwards.

Well based on that then I may well have the turrets already in situ.
Thanks everyone for there response. I appear to have gained a lot of knowledge on the fitting of roll hoops! What a fantastic forum this is!

Hi Grumpy, fitted some OEM ones to mine a few weeks back. Got them from spurs fan in a coupe. If you get some, I will be happy too give you a hand to fit them as i'm not far from you. It is worth it.

At the risk of provoking an attack from HT About providing incorrect info on his forum, as happened previously, my 97 had the outers installed. The bars were installed along with the small plastics which I purchased attached to the bars. I have only been able to find one set of the inner mounts which are now being installed in TOO and were a very generous gift from my friend Ash. I purchased the smaller lid off eBay and it is the only one I've ever seen on auction. So if you can get everything from one source go for it, as the individual parts don't show up very often. You may be required to purchase the complete set of plastics and bars together unless you are like me and can't afford to buy complete units and pay to ship them to Canada. They are also difficult to find out of the USA. Can't be sure but you may be able to pop off the top outer caps and look in to see if you have the mounts down below @Grumpy and Mike if your car was first registered in Sept 96 your build date was most likely 95 or early 96 and could very well have been one of the earliest Z3 produced. And that my friend was why I was upset when you chose not to try to fix it. These are just my simple thoughts and not to be taken as gospel as I may be providing inaccurate information unintentionally! JIM

As I told you before, the bloke that bought it is going to stick a Corvette V8 in it, so it will be repaired.
Oh, and as I typed, it was registered in October 1996.

The month and year of first registration has nothing to do with the year it was born. Therefore yours with a first registration of Oct 96 could not have been a 97. And yes it will get a corvette engine, so what! Especially if it was one of the first Z3's ever built! It's now lost! JIM
