This has only just started and not read the codes yet but wondering if any probable culprits.
The car is an auto and couple of times has stopped when on tickover at traffic lights and occiasionally has nearly stalled.
2nd thing is twice now difficult to start when hot and been stood, 1st time for 1/2 hour ish when at @RussellO the other week and again tonight when stood for 10 mins.
Will check codes tomorrow, any pointers?

I had a similar thing on my E46 325i which is also the M54 engine. The code reader said inlet camshaft sensor, I replaced it and all was well.
You need to get the codes read. I only use a generic code reader.

@Brian4 , hi Brian, exactly the same issues I had with my 2.0 when the inlet cam sensor failed.

Tony.

Thanks @mwpe and @t-tony will do tomorrow, just back from a run to Cannock Chase, just me and the dog.

I trust you mean a run in the car?

Tony.

Now I know why Hardtop has problems with you. Yes of course, the dog wouldn't make it that far let alone me.

Too bloody hot for running anyway Brian.=))=)) I got my replacement inlet cam sensor from ECP but asked for OEM quality.

Tony.

@t-tony this one isn't it ?

one is a HAAS and the more expensive on is VEMO
I originally bough a cheaper one from them Brian and it lasted 1 year, it was about £36 IIRC but that was 2 years or so ago. I fitted what was obviously a Bosch part with the makers mark ground off ( such as ECP and Andrew Page do this a lot and sell them markedly cheaper than the dealers).
This was the cheaper part which failed.

This is the one I replaced that one with, you can plainly see it's a Bosch part. Google the part number.

This is the part no. and the box it came in.

You could feel and see the difference in quality Brian. Hope this helps mate.

Tony.

Read the codes from INPA and got 65 and 18 which are both Intake cam sensor so will get on ordered and should cure the stalling and or hesitation when pulling away.

Well don't always believe code readers must check simple things first...
Started to strip down to get at the sensor. Cover off, breather pipe off, solenoid out and then trace the wire.
Got to take the intake pipes etc off to get at the connector block.
MAF out and the top boot and guess what great big split. Gaffer taped up till I get the new one and no error codes after a shortish drive round.
Similar symptoms to @Grumpy when we were up at yours @t-tony . Might have to try it out again later.

Glad you have found the issue Brian.

As you have the sensor are you going to replace it anyway Brian? These maf things seem very prone to splitting.
New motor "if it stalls check your maf"

Yes I am going too. I've just been for a longer drive and it drives better and no cut outs but the codes are back. When I cleared them before they came straight back. Will probably wait until I get the new rubber boot. Seems waste of time taking it off twice and I might pull the gaffer taped off doing it.

I had same symptoms. Intermittently ... Inlet cam sensor replacement solved it for me too... Hated stalling so often... Always seemed to hold up an mx5. :bored: I Was advised that fault codes can clear and reappear apparently depending on the engine temp.

Replaced sensor tonight but not run yet as I am waiting for the new inlet hose, ordered from BMW £20 with BMWCC discount. cheaper than ebay. Will be here tomorrow so pick it up on way from work and hope all codes are gone.

Fitted the new rubber hose fired up cleared codes obligatory drive and hurray no codes. Does pull better as well but I might have to check again☺

Good news Brian:thumbsup:. The gaffa tape is redundant now then.;)

I might keep it as a spare. Good idea?
Good thinking, perhaps I'll keep my old water pump for the same reason. On second thoughts...no:nailbiting:
