Just popped out for a sneaky McD's and the old gal was running rough as anything.

Popped the bonnet and found the air box connection with the MAF wasn't entirely secure. Some of the plastic where it holds the metal retaining clips had broken off. Revving the engine I could also hear the tell tale suck of air.

Had some pliars in the boot so bent the clips so they gripped a bit tighter. Now runs as she should again, but still have a bit of sucking noise so will have to check all the intake pipes when I have some more time.

Any pictures of this please Gaz as don't know where this is or what it looks like.:(

I'll take some tomorrow Andy. Was in a rush as I didn't want my Chicken & Chutney Indian burger to get cold ;)

Yuk - Do you think Rosie was trying to protect you by not getting you there?

More inportantly, was the burger any good?
I saw that on the menu at the services on Sunday but went for the Brazilian one instead, wished I hadn't...should am have gotten 2 cheese burgers instead!

It was OK, probably wouldn't have another one though. The alternative was a South African one where I was...

Now in South Africa they know how to make a proper burger, it's just blasphemy McDonald's trying to pass off cardboard as South African meat, even a Welshman would agree they know their meat down there!

Wow do you ever get an assortment to choose from! We get nothing that bold over here but then again our population isn't as diverse as the UK! JIM

@GazHyde you could probably have used that Maccy's "burger" to repair your inlet problem.=))
Seriously though it will be interesting to see some pictures of the offending part when you have time.;)

Tony.

For those that asked. If you look at the top red box at the right hand position of the metal clip, and then compare it with the position on the bottom clip. You can see that it's further left than it should be and that's because the plastic has given way. It's now clamping on a different part of the plastic and is allowing about 5-7mm gap.

What you can't make out is that I have bent the end of the bottom metal clip with pliars so that it's able to clamp tighter. Also have the top one a bit of a tweak, and now it sits on exactly as it should.

Thank you for the update and picture - funny enough I did the exact same repair yesterday with one clip slack and not clamping as tight as the other, there is a large O ring as well in the joint and mind had been replaced incorrectly and was rucked up and not sealing properly. Did you get the EML come on? That was the reason I had checked mine and all the other hoses - getting the light and the P0170 code - although I wouldn't have thought an air leak before the MAF would cause any problems apart from allowing unfiltered air to enter the system. Mine (a 1.9) runs fine but I keep getting this code - the MAF itself looks clean and when I have unplugged it the engine runs rough and I get 2 more codes pop up indicating a MAF problem - so I think it is working ok.

I can clear mine and it stays off for around 70 miles and then returns and stays on until I reset it again - just checked all hoses and put a new fuel filter in - the light is off at the moment - so will wait and see if that has cured it.

Spot on that Gary. No issue but I'll stick my head under the bonnet just so I know where it is for future reference.

What about the universal solution?
Duct tape! Every car should have a roll in the glove box!
