Well that’s not seen the light of day for a decade or so.
Sticker under the boot carpet said it was inspected at a main dealer in 2010!

Haha a lot of the carrier is now dust on the garage floor. I couldn’t get the hinge bolt out to remove the cage so I’ve put it all back together for now. That’s for another day.

Typical main dealer kind of 'thorough' service/inspection. In my experience they are only interested in selling new cars and carrying out the basic servicing of those or other nearly new cars.

I cleaned and repainted my space saver earlier this year.

Nice job. I was going to do the same but on reflection today if I need to use the spare, the wheel I take off will be a problem because there’s nowhere to store it. So I think I’ll do away with the spare rather than go to the effort of returning it and the cage.

I feel your anguish, but if the wife walks home, it would fit on the front seat.

I've always thought it's great that BMW managed to find space for s spare on the Z3 - something they did away with on all later variants of the Z4.

Not the ideal location as you have found for collecting road debris but the issue is resolved with regular removal and cleaning.

It's saved me on a number occasions before so I'd never consider removing it. Worse case scenario if the wheel you remove doesnt fit just hide it and return later to collect 👍

The E46 space saver is a good replacement as they fit inside the boot and normally stay in excellent condition. Just give it a bit of waxoyl before fitting into the Z3 cage.

Agreed with Andy i have an E46 space saver after the guy across the road from me blew up his E46 engine and scrapped it space saver was in great condition after living in a boot for 20 odd years rather than underneath.
