The secondary air pump on my 2000 2.8 wasn’t working so I decided to investigate, I removed the top from the unit which just clips on to find a foam, assume washable filter. When I removed it it just crumbled. I’ve googled secondary air pump filter but can’t find any mention, are they available from BMW? I removed the electrical plug, gave it a spray will wd40, replaced, started the engine and the fan kicked in, sorted.

If you are in UK I would just disconnect or remove. If removing you would need a blanking plate. @t-tony makes these

And, I have just made a new batch. Available by post in a couple of weeks for only £7.50 Inc. P&P.

Tony.

I’ll put my name on one please Tony. Ah assume you mean blanking plates not filters?

Yes Neil, plates. I'll put your name on one. Thank you kindly.

Tony.

Forgive my noobiness (and resurrecting an old thread), I'm still familiarising myself with the M52. But this the secondary air pump, right?

@t-tony I'd be interested in one of your blanking plates please if you still have any stock? 😇

Excuse my ignorance but what do they do, something about the valve in the exhaust. The flap/valve is still opening and shutting.

It’s mainly for US market, it simply pumps fresh air into exhaust to dilute emissions for smog tests in states like California.
Mines on a shelf in the garage.

They relentlessly chastise you for wrecking the planet while staring deep into your soul and daring you to be a better person.

If you meant secondary air systems, I googled that for you:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondary_air_injection
Basically, injects air into the exhaust to deal with excess CO+HC combustion pollutants produced during a cold start and helping light off the catalytic converter to get the emissions controls running sooner.

Sorry, wasn’t trying to be a smart-ass, its just sometimes I can't help myself...

Not needed in Europe, anywhere. Makes absolutely no difference to MOT emissions test results. The one from my 2000 Z3 went in the bin because the bearings failed and it howled like a banshee.
I still have blanking plates which I can post when we get back home. Thank you.

Tony.

If you really want to retain the pump, you can make a new filter out of any piece of foam, such as a small sponge. I wonder how many people think to clean the filter every few years, and oil it before replacement?

I'm not opposed to keeping mine, as far as I know it is working. The issue with mine is some - or even all - of the mounting points have broken, and it is basically just being held in place by its own weight and the pipework.

I'll check the state of the filter now I know what it is and consider fixing the mounting brackets, otherwise I'll pester Tony for one of his blanking plates when he's back 😇

For the time being my secondary air pump all good .
So im going with the
' if it ain't broke dont fix it ' tact at the moment
Stephen.
