I'm thinking of replacing the factory MSport steering wheel for something a little smaller in diameter. At 6'3" I sometimes struggle to get clear air when turnign the wheel mear my legs. Does anybody have an aftermarket wheel they'd recommend and if so, what considerations are there with the OEM eair bag?

If you get a smaller wheel you might end up with the wheel obscuring some of the dash, speedo etc. I would say get a flat bottom but that wouldn't really help with the turning.
 
Or I guess I could try and take make the seat a touch lower.

Had a look today and agree; options to lower are limited. It’s weird, in the 2 x 2.8s and MCoupe I’ve owned before I don’t recall this happening. It’s not all the time but my hands don’t have the gap on a half or full lock turn.
 
A flat bottom one is the best option.

I have used a RAID steering wheel for years, and love it - the only downside is cost - when I bought mine the exchange rate was very favourable, but things have changed. I bought mine directly from the manfacturer in Germany, for about half the price being asked in the UK.

I have been told that the airbag belongs in the Ford Fiesta, which is probably a good pedigree! RAID supply wheels to lots of high-end manufacturers, such as Porsche.

I find it a lot more comfortable than the original massive M type, the strange shape of its rim and hard plastic bits leaving my fingers aching after a long run. The only downside is that the horn buttons are not very tactile, and that many people get excited that it does not have a BMW logo in its centre. On the other hand it has an airbag (single stage) and is TuV type approved. It does not obscure much of the speedometer, but leaves the usual speed limit levels visible - however, for a six-foot plus driver this may be a problem.

Have you tried the seat tilt upgrade modification? It lifts the front of the seat about 20mm which I’m told gives far better legroom and a more comfortable position for long journeys
