So, guys and gals. My car’s alarm did not go off last night! It’s raining here, atm. When there's a break in the weather I shall
Go and inspect the boot area for rain.
The battery was new in September 2924 @AntStark but as you're rightly pointed out, my car has not been driven. Would this still affect the battery?
That’s good news then! Batteries will discharge and degrade over time, your car will draw a small current even when not being driven. For mine that takes about a week of not using the car before it’s flat 🫤. You’d need a multimeter to check the charge it’s got. Assume it starts ok ?

Yes, it’s starting after I had to charge the battery, Ant. The steering is very, very heavy and there’s a very weird noise coming from under my car.

Sunday update: the alarm hasn’t gone off!!! The area that was frozen around the units to the lefthand side of the boot (please see previous photo) remains clear so fingers crossed, this one issue may now be resolved.

Really happy you got your Zed back
Thanks, Phil. I am, too. My Z is in a state, though, with lots of damage and things not working and other very concerning things. BUT it is home 🏡 at long last after SIX while months!!!

Heavy steering on a Z3? I've always felt that mine was way too light, wouldn't mind trying it without power steering, but that's an MOT fail just waiting to happen. Best start by checking the fluid level, after that it's down to mechanical problems. mine had very stiff UJs on the steering column, wound up taking it out and giving it a soak in penetrant that it won't forget in a hurry, and hasn't been a problem since. Start with the easy bit and work up to the harder stuff.

Thanks @the Nefyn cat I’m going to do this later today or tomorrow. I didn’t realise non-working power steering is a MO T fail so thanks for this. My car also has a weird, repetitive noise coming from the underneath. No idea as of yet what this is and it’s on driving in a straight line or around a bend…I’m beginning to see why a mate who does mots as a favour by someone who will remain anonymous was favoured!!!

3 litre Z3 pretending to be Italian exotica. Two previous E89 Z4s.
What I meant was that the steering on my Z3 feels too light, I'd like to remove the "power" part of it
What other cars do you drive?
My Z3 has the heaviest steering of any car I have driven for many years and it has skinnier tyres than standard (205/15"). At least the power is hydraulic and not electric.

52 tons and no power steering, may have had to grow some strength instead.;)

Passed my car test in a LWB Landrover, no power steering in them, either. Or synchromesh. Or nice light servoed brakes. Or comfort. Or...........
Very good! All that strength comes in handy whisking cake mixtures! 🤣
I know who to call when I need a hand! 🤣🤣🤣

What regiment were you?
Not in a regiment, just got attached to plenty. What a little tease I am.

And making mayonnaise.

Not a euphemism.

Got a cake on the way, large bar of Galaxy and 50 gm of Galaxy drinking chocolate to make sure it looks properly brown.

You may be too late already. Sorry. Greedy tw@, ain't I? Didn't mention the half-a-jar of marmalade, did I? Or that the sugar was demerara that's spent a while in a jar with a couple of vanilla pods, carries the flavour and smell very nicely.

I have, at long last, got my car back! I hear you rejoicing with street parties and bunting!

I’m documenting the damages to my car and one of these is the alarm is going off non-stop at night. I’ve discovered two units in the righthand side of the boot are not only immersed in rain water but this is a frozen block. Please see the attached picture.

I really need help to get this resolved and am asking for your help, please. View attachment 352671
Yikes, that’s a nasty situation with the alarm and the water/frozen units. Sounds like the water ingress has likely damaged the modules. I’d suggest carefully drying them out and checking for corrosion, but honestly, replacement might be the safest option to stop the alarm and avoid further issues. Hopefully someone here has dealt with the same setup and can share a more detailed fix.
