Thought people who hadn't done this might like to see a picture to help make up their mind. Changed out all the original bulbs of the front of the car today.

Pretty significant change...I will let you decide which side is the new sideo_O:D

Next step is de-tangoing but that slightly stresses me lol

Also changed out my rear speakers ( still have to do the kick panel ones). It's quite incredible the cheap sh*** bmw put in for factory speakers:eek:

Those new bulbs take years off the car in my opinion. I have also fitted led bulbs in the reversing lights and the rear indicators ( including additional resistors on the indicator bulbs to stop the flasher can throwing a wobbler). A cheap way to modernise the lights. I'm looking for red led side/tail light bulbs but they're still quite expensive still. Work in progress.

I agree Tony €14 on flea bay for the full set and the car looks way better...hate that yellow weakass bulb glow.

Speakers were the 4"...went with a nothing special vibe speaker as I had heard the rear only did so much overall. To be honest if I had replaced the oem speakers with two bean cans it would have been an improvement.

I am trying to secure these at the moment on a Irish advert site for the front kickers and tweeters. They are up for €50 which strikes me as a bargain!

Need to do something with mine , the car has the hk set up. As the ohm ratings are different speaker to speaker but on the low side i can run 4 ohm speakers without issue using the same amp set up, it would just mean the volume has to be higher.
Only have the 3 inch rears so some fettling is going to be needed as i go to at least 4" if not 5 1/4" ...... its on the list ... .
 
Yes I agree the Z looks much younger with the new bulbs ........ :p

Just take it slowly and don't get distracted when they are in the oven. Otherwise it's been done many times without goofs ;)
 
So....nearly 3 months later I finally get around to changing the kicker speakers and the head unit. Was all pretty straight forward.

Head unit brings the car a bit more up to date with an aux, sd, mini sd, usb port, and also blue tooth for the phone and the ability to stream spotify from my phone to the car. This is all good because with the old head unit all it had was a radio and CD...I had realised that I had a total of 5 CD's left in the house and they were all awful. :bored:

Also sprayed the front grills black the other day :)

They're direct fit replacement. The only ones I had to fettle were the CREE style LED indicator bulbs which required a resistor to be connected with them to make the flasher unit work correctly, these were very cheap to buy and very easy to fit. The same type ones go in the reversing lights as direct replacement.

As you can see they're not available over here and the postage is quite high but, they look so much better.

Thanks guys, the head unit is one of those ones you can choose the colour on (7 options) so it's a good enough match and the look of it sort of reflects the heating controls.

Fitting the bulbs is about as complicated as changing a bulb in your home. Really easy...all six take about 10 mins in total.
 
That's a lovely looking head unit. Love the central round control flanked by the circles on the display, ties in well with the dash.
What make and model is that?


A question te the headlight bulbs- when the lights are off and in daylight can you see the blue tint of the bulbs through the headlight lenses?

The head unit is an Xomax XM-RXU221BT-B Do a search on ebay its really cheap and puts out a better sound than the more expensive (admittedly old) pioneer unit I took out. With the change in the speakers all round and this new unit the car finally sounds like it has a proper system as opposed to some tin cans in each corner making annoying attempts at bass :rolleyes:

You can see in the pic below that even in strong sunlight the blue bulbs are not an issue...

I've a thing for the blue tinge visible and when I saw the price of those bulbs (just £14.90) for high, low, fog and sidelights (8 bulbs!!) I was wondering what a the catch was!
I'm sure I paid something low £40 for the Phillips night vision ones I have (just the dipped). They've lasted around 3yrs though and I have my lights on whenever I use the car (day or night) but still only around 6k miles a year of use.
I'll get a set and do the rest of the lights.

Have to look up that headunit, never heard of it but like the look and how it ties in.

Nice rims and shine by the way!
