Tiny mysterious cog

Does anyone know where this goes…?

I was pulling out the central console and this tiny cog pinged out. I’m certain it’s something to do with the climate control knobs but I cannot work out exactly where it came from!

It's a damper. I've never seen it in a z3 but in mercs there's a flap over the ash tray and when you touch the flap it kinda flips up slowly looking posh. A cog like that makes it go slow, stops it rattling etc.

I could imagine it, as you said, on climate control but, as I said, I've never actually seen one.

Anyway. It might not stop something working something might feel different or rattle
