Water pump replacement

After reading a few horror stories about water pumps failing and causing serious damage to the engine, I have just ordered up a new Dolz water pump and belts from Mister-Auto. I was suprised at how little they cost (less than £30 for the pump and £20 for "Continental" belts).

It looks to be a relatively straightforward job to replace, does anyone have any experience of changing one?

I like to do things myself where possible, but I have a fairly limited mechanical ability! If it's tricky, or there is a high risk of me breaking something then it will be booked into the local garage.

I just paid £38 for a water pump for my ford escort, so make sure its a quality one as you could end up worse off ;)
 
It was the most expensive one they stocked, there are also Valeo and SKF pumps all around the same price.
 
I'm thinking of changing ours soon and found this for changing the belts and removing the viscous fan. Once they are off the water pump is easily seen. Obviously the radiator has to be drained and the system bled when refilled which may not be easy.

A little update on the waterpump.

The Zed went into the garage yesterday to have the pump changed but the mechanic found a small leak on the rad, so decided not to change the waterpump thinking I would probably want to change the rad at the same time.

I have been shopping around for a radiator this morning and what a shock. £240 from BMW, and nobody else seems to stock an aftermarket one.

Because its just a small leak, my local rad company have offered to repair the existing one, but I'm not sure that this sounds like a great idea.

Can anyone suggest anywhere that may stock radiators for a 3.0 Z3, I have tried the usual online places. From memory the BMW part no. is 1710173519.

iv just had my rad done for 195 including fitting and new hoses...

I had a radiator recored a few years a go, it worked out much cheaper and lasted for years. If you don't fancy that there is a second hand rad on ebay for 80 quid. I would imagine it would be from a breaker so should come with some sort of warranty :-bd
