What is this extra bit on my door latch?

Pictured below are the two locks I now own. The photo from in the door is my new (to me) lock, and the other photo is the original one I removed. However, there is a small difference between the two, the new one has this extra bit and the old one does not.

Could someone please let me know what the extra bit does and whether it is needed.

Thank you Chris

I'm scratching my head here trying to remember.

f I remember rightly that thing is only on the driver's side. Something to do with locking/unlocking with the key. I assume the passenger door of a LHD car wouldn't have that.

Just out of interest. What didn't work on the old one? ie reason for replacing it.

The extra lever is the driver's side locking/ unlocking latch, so that the central locking can be locked/ unlocked using the key on the driver's side only.
IIRC it is only used on later cars but I could be wrong.

Mine is now connected to an aftermarket key barrel via a piece of very thin braided wire but isn't connected to the 'lectrics in the door mechanism, so is almost useless TBH.

Thank you both for your help, that gives me a bit of comfort because I was scratching my head aswell to try and figure it out.

I am a bit surprised by the answer as my new lock is for the passenger side! Oh well as long as it works, I don’t mind the extra weight, I guess. =))

As for the reason for replacement @Duncodin, my passenger door has always been a bit stiff since I got it in November. I tried all the common fixes, like adjusting the receiving latch height and angle and checking whether the door had dropped, to no avail. Then after a bit of fiddling around I realised the “turny bit” that the receiver goes into was very stiff and I could only just about turn it, having to try as hard as I could, completely different to the drivers side. I tried all sorts of lubrication but it was SO stiff I knew that any manner of lubricant wouldn’t fix it, there was an underlying issue, so I took it out, inspected it and realised it was all pressed together so, not going to come apart easily. So spursfan sorted me out another

Thanks for your help, Chris
