I've had exactly those symptoms very scary .it was a bulge in the tyre a back one if I remember ,I couldn't believe it was something that simple,it had to be more complicated, put new ones on made extra sure pressure was right .happy days.

It only takes something to take the balance off slightly for vibration to occur. Thats why even shafts have balanced weights added to make the whole rotation force equal. If you think about it, the weights added to wheels are only small but make a hell of a difference. I deal with noise, and it only takes a damaged fan with a nic in it to create a lot of turbulence and noise within a duct. Same principle.

If you can get over to Hampshire one day we could try a spare set of 18" BMW MV1's for a days drive to see if that makes any difference. Or alternatively, you could try my 17" winter wheels.

I'm suffering the same issue with a rear tyre at the moment (new ones ordered) I picked up a nail and it got a little underinflated and damaged the wall.

If trying some other wheels don't cure the problem I have a couple more ideas from a problem I had with my 2.8 a few years ago.

It doesn't take much for layer seperation to start simply under inflation is the main culprit. I suspect your supplier got a batch of poor quality tires considering they are needing to balance both tires. Usually one tire may have seperation but it is usually a quality control problem when two tires are bad leading to a recall of that brand, hopefully before someone has a fatal accident. In my last post my wife's car only had 200km on it and the sidewall blew out. Also, I meant to say have the wheels checked for trueness while the tires are off for inspection. They can put them on their balancer and spin check them to verify they are not the problem. JIM

SORTED!!

Well I am one very happy chappy.
£70 on a pair of part worn tyres, and the car has never driven so smoooooooooothly.

So definitely a problem with tyres.
I am going to cut my losses and the part worn shop will dispose of them for me.
I'm unsure if there was an actual fault with both tyres, or if the tyres just didnt suit the car, and i guess i will never know, all i know is i wont be buying Cooper tyres again.

So can you guys recommend a proper brand of tyres, as i dont want to keep the part worns on here for long!!!

One thing the guy did point out, is that he suggested using the wheel nuts that have the washer type thing on, as he said it looks like the nuts are cutting into the soft alloys

Thanks again for all your advice

Glad you finally got some peace by replacing those tires. Personally I'd have taken them to the supplier and asked for a factory rep to access them, you may have gotten a credit towards some new tires.

Nice one Wayne.

Next time I need tyres I will be going with the 453's. If you haven't seen the reference elsewhere have a look on http://tyreleader.co.uk. You buy the tyres from them, then find a local fitter. Works out much cheaper, but can take a few days for the tyres to arrive from Germany.

I got a quote from work today for my car and they were £68 for rear and £52 for front, that's all inc. for 453's

Tony.

That's a good price @t-tony. Is that to you or anyone?

Was for me but I may be able to get very similar out of Ebenezer as it's not yet Christmas. I will ask tomorrow. What sizes are you running Dave?

Tony.

Thanks for the offer Tony but I'm not ready for new fronts just yet. I was wondering if your price was trade just for you. I paid somewhat more for my rears (245/40/17) £87.54 all inc. The 453s were £89.34, but out of stock when I wanted them hence me having the 914s.

OK I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.
I've just has the Falken 914's fitted to the front and bang the wobble is back!!
The part worns i had fitted were slightly better, but my initial reaction of it solving the issue was a bit hasty. They did make it better but there was still a 'rumble' at higher speed.
Now with the Falkens i get a big vibration in the steering wheel over 40 mph and the entire car has a shudder feeling. Every part of the interior is shaking and squeaking.
So this clearly is not a tyre or wheel issue and has to be something else. The only thing i am thinking is that when i changed the front discs, they took a bit of persuasion to get off, and i used a hammer on the discs to free them. could this have damaged / bent the hub causing it be miss shaped?

These wheels where fitted to a 5 series also i have just changed my wheels and i got the shake mild at around 30 and not really getting any worse .
Again it was spigot rings the z3 has a 72.6 hub the 5 is 74.1 its only 1.5 mm but enough to do it if you pop off a center cap can you see any gap hub to wheel it will be visable even at a few mm ?
Its a strange one for sure it can not be tyres it maybe that they bolted them on more centrally with the part worns removing it a bit .

Just read your post again are you sure the hub faces where clean when you bolted back the new discs if not they will cause this as they will be almost out of balance ?it may be worth removing them again and checking

Sounds like a plan. I will break them all down at the weekend and check, check and check again
Many Thanks
