Wheel Wobble issues

If it appeared after the brake change it would appear them to be the culprit the disc are obviously not warped as the wobble would be felt in the brake pedal. But if they are not 100% flat to the hub may be a missed bit of rust from the old discs, that 1-2mm at any point of the surface would cause a wobble as the disc would not run true

@waynerp, when we first bought our Z3 we had severe wheel wobble, shaking the steering wheel at about 55-60mph. I tried balancing the front tyres but in the end it turned out to be a sticking caliper O/S/F IIRC. Just something else to check while you're stripping it all down again. Best of luck.

Hi guys. Well it feels like I'm slowly replacing every part of this car. I checked all brakes and discs, no issues. Have just had the nearside wishbone & ball joint changed. Got the mechanic to take it out and he says its definatly not a wheel / tyre / brakes / discs / wheels issue. He says its more like a drive shaft, prop or diff issue. He told me to take it to a specialist which I did. They basically said they would take it out for a test drive, put it on the ramp and if its nothing that is staring them in the face then its a case of "chasing the problem" which sounds very in specialist and very expensive. Feeling very p####ed off!!!!

Sounds like a prop shaft mate. Not too big a job.

One central bearing with a rubber enclosure that falls apart. When it does the car shakes like crazy.

Yeah I have fitted a few. Exhaust off, Heat shield off, Disconnect the prop both ends and lower out. Can be done on stands with a set of spanners. You will need a bearing puller to remove the old bearing.

I cant see the prop shaft causing a front wheel wobble, its attached to the back wheels, I would look at all the ball joints, steering rack and top mounts, The lower arm actually has two ball joints and these wear.

Is it front wheel wobble? I haven't read all the thread :D

If that's the case ignore my comments.

Hi All.
At the start of the problem it was unquestionably front wheel wobble. At times VERY violent wobble from the steering wheel. Since changing the front tyres (now on the third set since January), changing pads, discs, shocks, springs, most of the bushes and both wish bones, and ball joints, the wheel wobble has gone and been replaced by car shake, the entire cockpit vibrates ( like going over a soft cattle grid ) at 70mph and above, i havent got the 'minerals' to keep going and see if it passes at higher speed. My thoughts are that this shake was being masked by the wheel wobble but cant be certain

I took the car to my mechanic again today, he put the car on the lift and we must have been under it for an hour, shaking and pulling on every part of the underside. He says that there is no play in the prop shaft, but cant be certain until it comes off to have a proper inspection.
So its booked in, but not for 3 weeks, but he is going to give the bugger a full going over!!! In the meantime i am going to use it as little as physically possible

What wheels have you got? Aftermarket wheels usually need spigot rings. Just a small thought.

You may have done this already but I would start again and try a different set of wheels and tyres if you have someone close its worth a try because this just sounds like tyre or wheel problem or a calliper sticking .it could be this simple .you could spend a lot of cash getting nowhere . I had what you describe with a right rear

Thanks for the advice all. I'm not sure if this is relevant to the car shake, but at higher load / speeds the car does pull to the left

Sounds like a calliper stick your hand on the wheels to gauge temp, but the obvious culprit is wheels, tyres or brakes.

I had similar symptoms a while back and it was a sticky calliper.
Same here, the vibration caused by the caliper sticking on was quite bad, when i went to put my hand on the wheel of the affected side it was stinking hot,i could smell it as it was so hot !
Annoying as i'd recently had new discs and pads :banghead:
Luckily there were no ill effects caused by it when i took it to have a new caliper fitted and it's been fine since :)
Hope you you get this niggling problem sorted soon
@waynerp as it would be a shame for this to put you off the car.

Sorry to hear you still having these issues.
Must be really frustrating.

You can use my 17inch BMW wheels to rule the wheels out (I have front and rears and I know they are straight as they run fine in my car).

There is a BMW specialist Tunbridge Wells I know of who has been recommend by some guys who built e36!track cars, might be worth him looking if it's not the wheels, I'll dig up the name.

Here it is: https://m.facebook.com/pages/Alltech-Garage/142899266815
He does lots of specialist stuff and plenty BMWs so must have seen it all by now.

Another one I've heard good things about is in Sutton Valance and they work on older BMW's too:
