z3 |New rear window

@pgunter has had a fair bit of aggro sourcing a rear screen recently. There is a recent wanted thread on here about it. Ended up buying one from BMW.

Hello,

Yes I did have a lot of bother sourcing a rear window and in the end went to my local BMW dealer who were cheaper by a margin than anywhere else for the OEM product. The one I had shipped from ADM in Germany as @GazHyde will confirm was too small.

Good luck and give your local BMW dealer a call and mention BMW OC Discount... and try your luck at being cheeky. Always worth it.

Did you fit it yourself?

personaly i think the one in the first link may actually be better than the BMW one, simply because the edge is made from canvas and will fold without creasing much better, just my thoughts (based on the fact i purchased an aftermarket one which has a crap edge trim that creases real bad and then leaks, maybe the oem should be ok).
i fitted mine myself but its a real pain (understatement of the year) trying on your own, not recommended unless you have deaf neighbors, save yourself a shed load of aggro and find someone else to lend a hand.

plenty of help - got two sons who can help, im off with one of them tonight to look at another z3 he wants to buy

I was looking at an ADM one too... was it obvious that it was too small? I don't want to take the old one out to find it doesn't fit....

I replaced my rear window with a ADM window: https://zroadster.org/threads/i-replaced-my-rear-window-arghh.6115/#post-77653

It did not totally fit, maybe my frame was out of line or maybe the window was too small, who knows? I bought the dark window, because that look is uber cool.

After the winter, when I took the hardtop off after 5 months, the top fabric has came out of the profile piping. It is still like that, I can't be bothered anymore to push it back with a credit card. I know it will come out again, and it is not leaking at the moment.

I think a lot of the problem shows itself due to the material of the zipper and top stretching over time. Usually shows with the stitching coming apart around the corners and progressing to the flat parts. When I decided to remove the rotten threading and completely remove the window I was amazed at how stretched the top material was, to the point it sagged down nearly two inches. Although my top wasn't leaking and was in good shape I decided to change it and forego putting the German ADM window in. This may explain why they seem small or won't zip into the original half of the zip! JIM

Strange one that as @Aceman got his from them and did a 'how to' and seemed happy with it?

Yes looks like the same one I got but that was a few years ago now. Mine was a tight fit and I did have to reinforce the zips on the corners by sewing around the zips as it had a tendency pull the zip open however once I had done that it was fine and has held up well since although as mentioned you do get a little kinking of the bead when the hood is folded down but does return to shape After a short while when back up.
If you can afford a genuine OEM window I would say go for it as you won't get better than that.

Mine never do, they are permanent kinks and not little ones, the material has now started to come away in these places too.
The window has gone cloudy, and its not just a surface cloud as it will not polish out (inside or outside)
Trouble is I have strained the zipper and material on the hood side so much trying to start this rubbish ADM window, that I can't now remove it to put a BMW one in as I think it will end up needing a replacement roof.

Ooh doesn't sound good at all Pete and certainly not the case with mine so maybe they have dropped in quality as it was around 5 years ago when I did mine I think.
