Does anybody else have all sorts of noises coming from their Z3?
Mine has a strange knocking when changing gear, an odd rattle when setting off in 1st and a slight metallic noise when the wheel turns. Any of these noises mean anything to anyone?

Also a squeaky steering wheel!

Connor.

Check diff eye bushes for the knocking, exhaust heat shields for the rattle and as for the rattle from the wheel try pulling the handbrake on a couple of clicks and see if it goes away. Steering wheel get a can of silicon spray and give it a light spray between the base of the wheel and the top of the column cowlings

And he strikes again....

Is the knocking more of a 1st and 2nd gear thing ?
I found my 2.8 to do this and was thinking diff bushes but after i had jacked it up and rotated the wheels and checked everything the noise disappeared.
My only thought on it was i had had no issues on test drive but after the mot and picking up it was apparent which i thought odd, not sure if it was just down to something not seating correctly after it had been jacked up but it cetainly is loads better but the 2.8 is slightly more clunkier in the gear box than the 1.9 and on reading it appears more prominant when cold in 1st and second....

I'd definitely say that it's more of a 1st/2nd gear things and could be worse when cold. My commute to work is only 3 miles each way so never fully warm. (Just bought myself a road bike for the commute). im not sure whether the knocking is a very bad thing or is just something that is there. My 1.9 changed gear seamlessly with no knocking or anything.

Im sure it may just be a thing thats there! i recall looking to resolve it on my last 2.8 i think its a thing that you learn to remove as you drive it as you become aware of it and what makes it happen, usually a fast lift on the clutch pedal.
I found the more i drive it the less its apparent...

From experimentation I've found that being more careful with the clutch helps. I'm going to get the MOT passed then investigate the issues further, I just don't think the 2.8 is at home stuck in inner city traffic.

That is for sure Ant. We had 2 years of running up to the Childrens Hospital many years ago and I can't think it has gotten much better. I should think Rome might compare as both City's were built on 7 hills.

Tony.

Its a nightmare lane markings are dismal and sat nav is useless im forever taking wrong turns, its not the best of cities to get around by any means.

Exactly this! One minute there's one lane, then it suddenly turns into 3 which all go in different directions, and if you're in the wrong one you're royally screwed.

Connor.

and if you're in the wrong one
I remember that feeling Connor, even from the early 90's when Carla was up there in hospital.

To be honest Connor I don't enjoy driving in Lincoln at busy times, red light after red light, does my bloody head in. I'm so glad I live out in the sticks here, do you think you might come over on the 13th Sept.? Only an hour from you.

Tony.

I have an auto and when I am going really slow and it drops into 1st and sometimes when I take off very lightly I hear a 'dink' sound from the rear somewhere. This only happens when very gradually slow almost to a stop or slight accelerate. I have no ide why it would do this. At first I thought it was the car settling on the springs but I have tried to slow really cautiously as not to upset the attitude of the car, perhaps the rear strut needs a look at????

Thanks mate, maybe next year.

Tony.

ps. Hope you enjoy the festival, who's on?

TBH, not many I know, I'm fairly reserved in my music 70's, 80's even some country. Big fan of Seasick Steve. Looks like when you've heard all of those you won't here the 2.8's noises anyway. =)) Just enjoy mate.:)
