I'm replacing the roof on my Z3, but my original roof liner is shedding the plastic layer.
New ones are very expensive....is it usual to just use the old liner and not worry about the plastic ?
Thanks for any advise.

Its the plastic sheet lining on the roof lining, mine is starting to detach from the liner as well, not at all sure anything can be done to it other than replace the whole roof liner if its still available at extortionate cost no doubt.
Real oem party No 26 here https://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/showparts?id=CM12-EUR-12-1998-Z3-BMW-Z3_19&diagId=54_0193
Yes thats exactly it...... I'm wondering how much the lining effects weatherproofing. Evan a third party liner is £600 or so.....

On a related note, am I right in thinking that the roof liner only appeared (from factory) in the facelift cars?

Someone on FB said they were looking for a pre-facelift with a roof liner, I said that I thought it was only facelift ones that would have it, unless it had been retrofitted - but was told I was wrong.

For my own curiosity's sake, does anyone know who was right?

Yes i think that is right...pre facelift didn't have a liner as far as i know.

My OEM hood (1997 vintage) doesn't have the roof lining fitted from factory. Non the worse for it IMO. Doesn't affect weatherproofing at all.
Thats good to know..... In that case I can probably use the old liner and pull away of the loose plastic layer.

If i go to realoem and look at 1.9 z3's from 98 and earlier they show liner as an available part. Normally if an option wasn't available then realoem would show it greyed out. So realoem thinks liner was available on preface cars. It also shows a different part number for liner available as an affer market upgrade. I suppose realoem can't be right all the time though.

I understood that "Greyed out" meant no longer available?

Tony.
